PROPELLED BY ELECTRICITY. The United States collier Jupiter, an electrically-driven vessel, was launched on August 24 at the Mare Island Navy Yard. The vessel, which will mako about 14 knots an hour, is 572 ft. long by 65ft. beam, and has a carrying capacity of 12,500 tons of coal and 375,000 gallons of fuel oil. Power is supplied by a six-stage Curtis steam turbine, which is directly connected to a bi-polar alternator, the speed of the unit at 14 knots being about 2000 r.p.m., and the voltage about 2000. This generating unit delivers its output to two motors, one mounted directly upon each propeller shaft. These motors have 36 poleß, so that the ratio of speed reduction is 18 to 1, the propellers at "14 knots being designed to operato at 110 r.p.m. Ooal can bo loaded from the Jupiter into a warship at the rate of 100 tons an hour, and duplex pumps will permit her to take in or pump out oil at the rate of 120.C00 gallons an hour. NEW TUG. PURCHASED. Oaptadn Swell, who went Homo on be-' half of the Gisborno Sheopfariners' Company to look for a suitable tug, has succeeded, and has been able to 6elect a boat which ho recommends as highly suitable for tho purposes of tho port. The vessel has a length of 90ft., beam 20ft.. and draught left., tho indicated horse-power beinr 475, and the speed ten knots. It is a new boat, and will be specially equipped with salvage audfire gear for any emergency when required on the coaet. Tho board of directors has approved of tho purchase. ROYAL MAIL STEAMERS.
