RESERVOIR DAM BURSTS.
"WHOLE POPULATION OF MATtTON TURN' OUT." (By Telegraph.—Press A&soclalion.l Marion, October 25. Word was received in Marion last night, that tho dam of the town water supply reservoir had carried away. Firebolls warned tho public, and nearly tho whole town population turned out, as it was thought (hero might be a possible danger ot portion of the town being flooded by tho sudden rush of water into the Tnlaeinii Stream. , . The reservoir is six miles distant, and tho dam broke at 0.15 p.m. The water reached Marton at 2 a.m., but beyond the sudden rise in the stream no damage resulted to tho town. Tho dam is sSol't. long bv 18ft. deep, holding from 38l to 15 million gallons. It was constructed by contract at n cost of JM3O7, nnd was taken over by tho council six 'months ago. The wall was damaged to tho extent of 20 feet at the bottom and from 50 feet to 00 feet at tho top. It will take somo thousands of pounds to repair it. In the meantime tho old reservoir will bo drawn upon for the supply. Councillors arc visiting tho sceno with tho consulting engineer this morning.
