BUTTER-FAT COMPETITION. , Considerable interest is taken each year in the champion butter-fat competition, held in connection with the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society's annual show. The cash prize-money for the competition totals £W, and is donated by tho Greytown, Dalefield, Belvedere, Tara:fahi, Carrington, and Parkvale dairy factories, and the society. There is also a ■challenge cup, valued at twenty-five guineas, to bo won three times, not necessar'ily iu succession. The conditions are that tho cows are to bo in possession of tho society for six days, the test lioing made on the last four days. The -coirs ■arc kept under normal conditions during the test, no artificial feeding being allowed. The competition has now been held for five years. The following are tho names of winners and breed of the win■ning cow:—
1008.— H. Feast, Ayrshire cross, 2,101b.; test, 3.0. 1909—C. Morgan, Ayrshire cross, 2171b.; lest, 3.8. 1910.— W. Savwell.Ttolslein cross, 2161b.; test, 3.5.' 1911.— W. Saywell. points gained constitute a record since the inception of the competitions. In fact, the records fur the second cow this vear beat, the mil winner, and but for the* Appearance of Mr. Hart's Holstein cross,
"Smut," which did not compete last year, the challenge cup would have become the property of Mr. Saywell, under the conditions for which it iscompeted. 'Thestewards in charge of the competition, Messrs. J. Hodder (principal) and John Monaghan, state that the records this year may be considered as remarkable, ami possibl'y c-ould not be beaten in any similar competition in the Dominion. At its worst," dairy farming, is a modified form of slavery, but-at its best it is as profitable and [pleasant a business as any man could desire. Dairy farming is at its best, with an up-to-dnle .equipment, which includes a reliable Milking Machine wth an "Anderson" Oil Engine to provide Ihe necessary poVer. There's no "slavery" where an."Anderson" Engine is installed; it docs the work of a number of men without a hitch. . Theso engines are eminentlv suited to dairy farm work aud you should make a point.of ordering one with voiir milking plant, Andersons, Ltd.! Christchurch.—Advt, A good thine; is cheap at any price. That's why so many factories have installed "Victor" Vats. Over a hundred Vats have been ovdered, and the better known they become the greater is the demand.
