Mr. Barr was well-known as the editor of "The Idler." He wa-j born in Glasgoiv and educated in Canada and the United States. After spending some years as a schoolmaster in Canada he joined the editorial staff of the "Detroit Free Press" in 1876. He came to. England in 1881 and founded "The Idler" .magazine in 181)2. Mr. Barr's novels include: "In a Steamer Chair," "From Whoso Bourn/' "The Face and the Mask," i "The Unchanging East," "The Victors," ''The Strong Arm,' 1 "Cardillac," and "The-. Father.William King, of the Redemptorist Monastery, Ballarat, well known in New- Zealand, is dead. The late Father King was born'in Australia, and was 17 years of age. He car-' .. ried out his ecclesiastical studies in England,: and afterwards • worked there for some years. He then returned to his native'country. He was a ntan of considerable/ability, and conducted, missions in varidus parts of Australasia. New Sealand "was visited by him in that connection six or seven years ago. For the nast ten years he was stationed at Ballarat, Victoria. Before entering the priesthood ae made his mark as o. cricketer.
