The Hon. Sir W. J. Steward, M.L.C., has been granted a further week's leavo of absence from tho Legislative Council on account of ill-health.

Tho death occurred on Monday morning of Mr. H. J. Tilloy. formerly well known in Wellington and Wangwiui. Mr. Tilloy was in Wellington for about five years, during which ho was in the employment of Johnston and Co. Homo six years ago he took a trip to England, and on returning to New Zenland was engaged in farming in tho Marlborough district. Mr. Tilloy was 53 years of age. Deceased was a cousin of the Hon. C. J. Johnston. Mr. Guy Johnston left for Blenheim on Monday to attend tho funeral.

Mr. and Mrs. Martin Kennedy and tho Jlisses (2) Kennedy, of Salamanca Road, Wellington, leave on a trip to England in December. They aro to journey to Europe by the Orient liner Orama, sailing from Sydney on December 21.

Private cablo news was received late last night to tho effect that Mr. E. J. Finch, late inspector for tho Bank of New South Wales in New Zealand, died in Sydney at 3 p.m. yesterday. Mr. Finch, who retired from tho service of tho bank about a year ago, left New Zealand then to reside in Sydney. He has been ailing for some time past, and recently suffered an attack of influenza, but dentil was unexpected. Mr. Finch, who was very well known in Wellington and throughout the Dominion, was about 65 years of age. Dr. John Kirk, medical missionary at Canton, now on furlough, is duo hero to-day from Sydney ( by tho Maitai. Dr. Kirk was sent to New Zealand by the Presbyterian Church of Now Zealand, jlrs. Kirk accompanies her husband.

The death is announced of Mr. J. 11. Wheeler, postmaster at Hnngiora. Deceased arrived in New Zealand in 1815, and joined tho Postal Department when 10 years of age. He has also served in responsible positions at Oamaru, Pnpanui, Westland, and Eivcrton. Ho suffered a break-down some months ago, from which he never recovered. He leaves a wifo and fivo children.

The Rev. H. 0. Hanby, who is very popular and well known in Auckland, and who.a few weeks ago met with a serious accident on a Lush railway in the King Country, which necessitated thooinnutatiou of one of his legs below tho knee, has made an exceptionally good recovery, and left tho Waikato Hospital last: week, liesides the terrible injury to his leg, Mr. Hanby received a very severe shock, and his condition at the time was considered critical. The news of his recovery will therefore be very welcome to his numerous friends. Mr. Hanby is nt present in Auckland attending .the Anglican Synod. On his first appearance at the proceedings he was heartily welcomed by the members, who expressed (heir deep sympathy with him in tho misfortune that he had met with.—Auckland "Star."
