_ Even though Royal Scotch was defeated in tho Caulh'eld Cup, his neiv owner hue probably by this time gained a return of his purchase money for tlio Royal Artillery colt. In tho Caulfield Stakes, Royal Scotch started at such long odds that n very small outlay would have wou over .£IOOO in bets, and then there wns .£BOO for prize-money, besides which the horse subsequently sectored second money ia the Coongy Handicap nnd third money in the Cup.
deferring to the St. Leger, on English writer says that it was a stroke of rank bad luck that Maher should have been claimed fol Chtinuiiiii (who actually finished last), for otherwise he would have riddeu Tracery, about whose chance he had for some considerable time been exceptionally sweet, but, of course, lie receives a big retaining fee from Lord Rosebery, and naturally in a race of such importance it was decided to allow Chnrlnian to take her chanco. But Maher's misfortune pavo George Bellliouso (the Anglo-French jockey) lu's chance, and, settling down in front, Tracery not only made every yard of the running, but never for a single instant looked like being deprived of tho lead. The favourite had the advantage of the inside position, \>ut was never really in the picture after the first six or seven furlongs. There was considerable scrimmaging in the race, and Lomond was cut about tho hocks, whilst Karl was very soro as (o tho treatment ' Fantasio received. There- was, as for as could be seen, no excuse for any of the other beaten horses. It is most satisfactory that the honour:! should have gono to so sterling a sportsman as Mr. A. Belmont. He has had horses at' Palais House- with John Watson for a number of vears, that, trainer winning tho Two Thousand Guineas for him with Norman 111. Tracery 'is by the Into Sir' J. Miller's Derby winner, Kock Sr.nd, but was bred in tho "States." Mr. Belmont purchased Rock Sand for .£25,000, and Topiary (dam of Tracery) for £2000.
