DISAPPEARED. WELL KNOWN PAHIATCA MAN. Pahiatua, October 21. Some anxiety has been caused in Pahwtua during Hie past week by the mysterious disappearance of Mr. E. Marriott, a well-known local hairdresser. Mr. Marriott left his home in Wakemau Street on Sunday evening, and hns not been heard of since, though inquiries have been instituted. Mr. Marriott/ who is a wellknown "sport," is the secretary of the Bush Boxing Association, nnd also a member of committee of t'no Honorary Territorials. An overcoat and cap were found on the bank of the river at Mangathinoka. by an angler last week, nnd these Have been handed over to.th« police. Tlie clothing is believed to have belonged to Mr. Marriott. The care of his wife and family has Lecu taken in hand by several local who have subscribed money on the family's behalf. PEACE MEETING'S PLEDGE. Christchurch, October 21. A large anti-milituiist meeting in Christchurch last night carried unanimously a resolution:' "That this meeting of G'hristc?iUrch oitizens pledges its-elf to oppose, the re-election of members of I'arliumenl, Mayors, nnd city councillors who havo forfeited confidence and vi6latcd the principles of representative government by supporting conscription nnd the.fining and imprisonment of boys and young men who objected to compulsory military service."
WOODVILLE RESIDENT'S DEATH, Woodville, October 21. Alexander Kirkna trick, who has been in business in Woodville for the past nine years, died suddenly yesterday morning. Ho had an apoplectic seizure on l'Yiday morning, and shortly nfterwnrds became unconscious mid remained so till he died. Deceased wns a respected citizen, and had been, a borough councillor for years, n- member of the Chamber of Commerce, of tho School Committee, nnd of the No-License Council. He was a prominent member of the Presbyterian Church, in which he was an elder. Ho wa9 50 years of age, nnd leaves a widow and eight young children. ESCAPED, BUT CAUGHT. Rotorua, October 21. A prisoner escaped from the Waiotnpu tree-planting camp tliis afternoon, but was recaptured in about two hours. THE OLD DEAL BOATMAN. Timaru, October 21. John Wilds, aged 88, who wns one of the Deal boatmen brought r out about 50 years ago' to work tho Timaru svrf boat service, committed suicide to-day under peculiar circumstances. Yesterday he underwent a rather serious operation. He got up early this morning, walked to the beach and into the water, but, being seen, was pulled out and taken home. A few hours after he left home aj/nin, thongh supposed to be unable to do m, and walked to the wharf and down-the boat steps into the water. ■ Though pulled out immediately, he was dead when recovered, probably from heart failure.
A "THIRTY THOUSAND CLUB," Napier, October 21, A public mocting was held to-night to receive the report and balance-sheet of the recent carnival. It was decided to form "A Thr.rty Thousand Club," having for its immediate object tho advancement of Napier, and, for its ultimate aim,' the bringing up of the population to 30,000.
WANGANUr HARBOUR BILL'. Wanganui, October 21. A public meeting to-night decided to ask tho member for the district to e'ndcavour to get tho Harbour Bill in its amended form through Parliament this session, tho Harbour Board to subsequently submit the wholo question to a plebiscite of ratepayers.
NAPIER-GISBORNE LINE. - -Napier, October 21. At a special meeting of the Napier Chamber of Commerce this afternoon a deputation, consisting of the Hon. J. D. Ormond (chairman of the Hawke's Bay River Board), Messrs. T.( Mason Chambers (county chairman), J. Vigor Brown, M.P. (Mayor), and C. Ellison (representing the Harbour Board, the Chamber of Commerce, and the East Coast Railway League) were appointed to interview the Minister for, Public Works in connection with 'the stopping of the work on the East Coast railway, and to endeavour to get a sum placed on the Estimates for tho construction of an embankment and bridge over the inner harbour for the railway. The delegates from Wairoa nnd Qisborne are to be asked to join the deputation. HAWKE'S BAY TRAMLINE PROJECT. Napier, October 19. The Government oiginecr estimates tho I cost of constructing a light tramline from ! Ptiketitiri to Hastings at MSi,l7i for 41 miles, allowing three miles for sidings. This works ont nt .£4200 per mile. NAPIER COMPETITIONS, Napier, October 19. The Competitions Society has decided to hold next year's festival at Easter in the new municipal theatre, which has post ■£30,000. Sir. Baeyerfa was again appointed judge. YOUNG MAN DROWNED. Hokitilca, October 18. Word was received here to-night that a young man about 19 years of age was drowned in the H/iast River (South Westland). He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eggelling, who reside at Oklirn, sonic eight miles further south. No particulars are to hand, but it is understood that deceased was crossing the river on horseback at the time of the fatality. FATAL ACCIDENT. Dunedin, October 20. Thos. Erridge, a fisherman, of Carey's Bay, Port Chalmers, 42 years of age, and married, was knocked down by a grocer s cart in Mac Andrew Road on Saturday evening, and picked up unconscious. He was taken to Ihc Cottage Hospital, where he; died to-day without regaining consciousness.
