MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before: G. Riddell, S.M.) - THE STOLEN FRUIT. At the Magistrate's Court on Saturday morning, before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., Frederick Howard, a waterside worker, was charged with having stolen two tins of preserved fruit, valued at Is. 4d., tho property of tho Union Steam Ship Company. Howard, who pleaded not guilty, was represonted by Mr., O'Loary. Evidence was given by two eye-witnesses, who both stated that Ihey- saw Howard take the tins from his truck and place them in one of tho cranes on the Queen's Wharf. Howard, in his defence, stated that he placed the tins in. the crane, as they had fallen ifrom a broken box, whilst he wheeled his truck into the shed. He' was so busy at the time that ho quite forgot to \!jet them again after he returned from the shed. • , His Worship fined Howard 405., with witnesses' expenses (10s.), and also the value of the two tins of fruit. The default was fixed at seven days' imprisonment.
SEAMEN FINED. Hush Kelly, James Mclcalfn, .. and George Law were charged with absenting themselves from the steamer Kia Ora without having obtained permission. Each of tho three was ordered to forfeit two days' pay, and pay Court costs, 7s. MAINTENANCE ORDEK. For a breach of a maintenance order made against him, George Hunter was convictod and sentenced to six months' uuDriscimieat*
