Tho postal authorities adviso that mails from tlio United Kingdom and America via San Francisco, Tahiti, and Rarotonga are due in Wellington on Thursday, November 7.
Something liko a rccord bullock was slaughtered at the Gear Company's works ou Thursday. This was a prize steer, bred by Mr. John M'Mastcr, of Lower Valley, Wairarapa, which had taken two first awards at tho Carterton Show. It turned tho scale at 11981b.
Mr. J. D. Williams, the picture manager, who loaves for Auckland on route to Sydney to-day, informed a reporter lost evening that the New Zealand Amusement Company, which has acquired the lease of the Empress (Into Adclphi) Theatre, has been floated with a capital of i! 10,000, which was largely over-sub-scribed. D. Williams Amusement Company) will leave Auckland for Sydney on Monday. Tho Labour Bills Committee of tho House of Representatives, reporting yesterday upon tho Shearers and Agricultural Labourers' Accommodation. Amendment Bill, recommended thnt it be proceeded with as soon as possible and foo made law this session. This is tho Bill in which tho Government proposes to take powers to regulate the residential conditions of flax-mill workers. Tho Victoria League of Wellington has been asked by the Canadian Trade Commissioner if it would lie possible to find homes for the Canadian Cadets, as it is felt that it is undesirable for them to stay at hotels. They are expected to arrive by the end of the month, and will remain hero threo days. The Council of the Victoria League state that they would bo glad to hear from those who may be disposed to billot tlio boys during their stay hero. Mrs. Chatfield is tho League s secretary. The Petitions Committee of tho House of Representatives reported yesterday afternoon on the petition of Nellie St. Leger and others, of Porirua, praying for compensation for loss sustained by tho lapse of hotel liconses consequent upon the alteration of the electoral boundaries. The report of the Committee was: "Tlint as the subject matter of tho petition is a, question of policy, and as there is a Bill before tho House, tho Committee lias no recommendation to make.' A deputation from the Hataitai Rate--1 payers' Association waited on his Worship the Mayor yesterday complaining of the wandering stock nuisance. After the deputation had expressed their views tho Mayor said he recognised the seriousness of the trouble to persons possessing gardens, and promised to confer with tho officials with a view to abating the annoyance. The Labour Bills Committee of tho House of Representatives will take evidence from any persons interested in tho Plumbers' Registration Bill on Wednesday morning at 10.30 o'clock. Tho conference of Health Department medical representatives, convened by the Minister for Public Health to discuss methods of combating the spread of consumption, is to open on Tuesday next at 10 a.m. ill the old Parliamentary Buildings. Tho proceedings of the conferencD will bo open to the press.
The method of distribution ■of the Public Works Statement by the Post and Telegraph Department was explained to members of the House of Representatives by the Postmaster-General last evening. The Statement, he said, was in all the principal newspaper offices in the Dominion. It had boon sent out by the Post Office and held by the postmasters until it was delivered nt 5 o clock that afternoon. The last post office to.receivo the Statement was Gisborne, which received it at 2.30 p,ra. A,.summary of the Statement had been telegraphed to the smaller papers in the remoter towns, and the last station to receive it had dono so at 5.32 p.m. Announcements of Sunday services will, be found on jiago 2 of this issue.
