OUR ELECTRIC LIGHT.
CAN ECONOMY BE EFFECTED? The following mnlter came up at last night's meeting of the City Council, on notice of motion given by Councillor Jl'lvenzie:—That the Tramway Board and tho Electrical Engineer report on the following matters in connection with the Electric Light Department:— (1) The total rent of grounds used for storing, coal. (2) The loss of steaming value of 6aid coal by being exposed to air. (3) The advisability of scrapping present engine plant and replacing same with a turbine engine. (4) Tho amount that can be saved with a new turbine machine. -
(5) Tho approximate cost of eroding a new power station to accommodate both lighting and tramways plants in a suitable position, and also their views regarding any uses to which the present buildings may be profitably put. in speaking to tho motion, Councillor M'Kenzie said that in regard to tho first question he understood the rent for storing coal amounted to something like .-CSOO per annum, and lie thought, it would be generally admitted that .£lO a week was too much to pay for storing coal. Ho contended (hat o report on questions 2. 3, and 4 would show that, economy could be effected, and in regard to the last question expressed the opinion that great saving would be the result of havin" lighting and tramway plants housed in one building, which could lie erected on ground less valuable than the present sites.' It was in the interests of the city that the matters, embodied in the motion should be reported on. Councillor Shirtolifle, 1 in seconding the motion, agreed that the matters were well worth consideration. After n brief discussion, the motion was carried on the voices.
