THE CHIEF JUSTICE AND THE PROFESSORS.
Ono of the opinions held by Sir Robert Stout, who is Chief Justice of the Do. minion nnd Chancellor of the University of New Zealaud, was dealt with goodliumourodly by the Hon. H. D. Bell in the Legislative Council yesterday. The Council were in Committee at the time, considering the Auckland TJnivereitj- College Amendment Bill. The point at issue was whether it was wise to allow professors to sit on college councils. Mr. Bell, who considered that professors should ba admitted to the council?, remarked that one of the most influential opponents of the proposal was Sir Robert Stout. The professors and Sir Kobert, lie added, had been at variance on the subject. "But, if the professors would leave him alone," continued Mr. Bell, "I think, he would Ims on the- cldo of the professors." Sir Robert, Mr. Bell proceeded to say, through his occupancy of a position on the Bench, had been prohibited from taking part in public controversy 'until by great good fortune ho had been elected Chancellor of tlio University.
