The following received invitations to luncheon at Government House yesterday:—The liight lion. Sir Joseph Ward, Lady Ward, and Miss Ward, Captain Stoptord, li.N., and Mrs. Stopford, Colonel and Mrs. Knox, Mr. J. B..Harcourt, Miss Harcomt, the Hon. Charles Johnston,' M.L.C., and Mrs. Johnston, Captain Spencer-Smith.
Last evening his Excellency the Governor attended (ho performance of "The Taming of the Shrew" at the Opera House. To-day ho will leave for Hastings to attend the Havko's Bay A. a'tul P. Society's show (on Thursday). On Friday lie will preside at the opening of the new cheese factory at Wniohiki. On Tuesday evening next ho will deliver an address beforo the Now Zealand Institute of Architects, and the following day will leave for Christchurch> vchere on October 2t he is to open a new kindergarten school. On October 25 he will attend the .agricultural show at Rangiora, and the same day will open .a new traffic bridge -.there. He will return, to Wellington on October 2G and leave for Christchurch tho following week to attend the Cup meeting.
Sir Wm. Steward, M.L.C., is at present lying very seriously ill at his son's residence at Island Bay.
A Press Association telegram from Hastings states that Mr. Campbell, M.P., who is ill with typhoid, is slowly recovering, anil it is expected that he will be ablo to leave liis bed in a week's time. It will probably be February before Mr. Maughan Barnett will take Tip his residence in Auckland. It is understood that the trustees of SI. John's Church and the committee of the lioyal Choral Society will confer on the \motter of Jlr. Harnett's successor as organist to the c'lmrch and conductor of the society.
Owing to indisposition, Mr. Nicholas Iteiil has relinquished tho position of chairman of Local Board of the New Zoalahd L&an and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., though still retaining his seat 011 the board. Mr. J. G. W. Aitkon has been appointed chairman in Mr. Reid's stead. Mr. John Baillie, who brought the collection of British paintings to New Zealand, leaves for Sydney cn vmito to London 011 Friday next. He is to give an "at home" in the Masonic Ilall'between 3 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. to-morrow.
Captain Ateo Frandi, who resigned his Senior Cadet Company 111 consequence of a dispute which arose between him and the Defence Authorities with regard to a question of seniority, has rejoined his company.
Mr. It. Bollard, member for Raglan, returned to Wellington yesterday after a short visit to his homo in the Wniknto. Ho states that the slips on the line have now nearly been cleared away, ami the trains will probably be able to run right through to and from Auckland to-day.
