AT THE BARRICADES.
TALLYING ON THE HUTT ROAD. As a guide to tb<. proportion which' each local body should pay to the reformation of the Ilutt Road, between
Wellington and Potono, a 6tart was made yesterday to keep a three-weeks' tally at two points on the road—at the beginning of tho Hutt Road, near the Thomdon Esplanade, and at the Koro Koro bridge, Pctone. JTwo clerks were stationed at each barricade, and their duty was to take the home address oi every pedestrian, cyclist, motor-cyclist, automobilist, and those in charge of vehicles of all descriptions. Some of the people looked askance when stopped at the barricades, and others who knew something about the object, took it rather as a joke, but all readily gave the information required. Motorcyclists wore the most difficult to deal with, and at times rode through the barricades without attempting to answer, questions which they hardly waited to hoar. All that is nooessary for them to say is: "From Wellington to Pototie," or "From Hutt to Wellington," as the case may be. Besides the two main checks, other tallies are being taken at the roads leading to Ngaio, at Kaiwaii-a, to Johnsonville at Ngahauranga; and at the Horokiwi Road. The Petone Borough Council is also taking an independent tally at Koro Koro. Our Pctone correspondent states:—Tho tally did not open very smoothly yesterday, and a good deal of argument with motorists and cyclists took place. Tho motorists complain that the lights at the barrier are insufficient, and they suggest that a red light should be placed on the barrier so as to warn approaching traffic. The motor cyclists have the same complaint, but those in charge'of the barrier state that some of the motor cyclists pass on without stopping. Tho barrier extends right across the cycle track at Petone, and the cyclists' complain that" they 'have to dismount from their machines. Besides the two men who aro at present stationed on the barrier, both the Hutt and Petono Borough, Councils have decided to put on an additional man. This will mako four men at the Petono end.
