The death occurred at Gunnodah (N.S.W.) on Monday of Mr. W. H. Short, of the well-known firm of W. TI. Short and Co., millers and grain merchants,

and during' recent years known as Australia's greatest wheat speculator (states tho "Sydney Morning Hennld"). The fact tliat his operations this year liavo not. turned out successfully is said to have preyed upon his mind. Early in tho year Mr. Short beeamo imbued with tho idea that tho whcnt i market would fall, and accordingly ho is reports! to have entered into contracts for extended delivery up to December next at prices ranging from 3s. lOd. to 4s. Gd. per bushel. But tho market went against liim. Instead of prices declining, tliey advanced, until to-day it is impossiblo to secure wheat under 4s. sd. or Is. 5Jd. per bushel. Some of tho losses were minimised by cancellations. It is understood that prior to his death Mr. Short contracted to sell wheat from January to Docomber, 11)13. To sell an articlo for delivery fifteen months ahead is a risk few business men would cure to take. Mr. Short aUo dealt extensively in jute fabrics.
