Afc San Francisco, Professor Jordan, addressing the Leland Stanford University students, paid a high tribute to the Australians as footballers. The Australians, ho said, played solely for love of tl*> sport, and Americans had much to learn in this respect. CIVIL SERVICE AMATEUR SPORTS CLUB.

ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the Civil Service Amateur. Sports. Club states that there are now 48 active) 9 honorary members, and one life-member. During the season 21new members were elected and 18 members resigned or were deleted from the roll. It is a matter for regret that the membership, is not larger, in view of the fact that over 200 members of the Public Service competed in various branches of the inter-Departmental tournament held during the season. > "As shown by the statement of receipts and expenditure, the club has a credit balance of 9s. lid. Although the amount carried forward is small, it must be remembered that both an inter-Departmen-tal tournament and an afternoon sports meeting had to be financed during the season, and the latter, through a poor attendance' of the public, resulted in. a considerable burden upon the club's funds. The club also carriers a small liability on account of unpresented orders for trophies won at the afternoon meeting, but, if as pointed out, members of the Service, interested in the tournament would assist tho Club by joining as active or honorary members, there need be no cause for anxiety as to tho financial nosition during the coming season. "The wholehearted response by prominent members of the Service to tho club's appeal for funds to provide trophies for the tournament is a matter for extreme gratification. The club's sincere thanks are due to the Right Hon. Sir J. G. Ward, Bart., for his generosity in presenting a valuable challenge trophy, and also to the following gentlemen for donations:—Sir James Carroll, Messrs. H. Pollen, T. Roynane, F. Waldegrave, T. W. Fisher, G. Allport, S. F. Whitcombe, A. Marryatt, ,D. Robertson, E. A- Dawson, G. Hogben, Sir E. O. Gibbes, Dr Fitchett, Dr. Hay, Messrs. W. C. Kensington, H. J. H. Blow, J. W. Salmond, P. W. Flanagan, J. Mackay, D. Millar, W. C. Gasquomo, G. G. Bridges, J. C. Lewis B. Wilson, W..S. Ridler, W. Morris, g! B. Dall, P. C. Corliss, J. W. Poynton, W. B. Montgomery, and Dr. Izard. Shortly before tho close of the season the club lost the services of its highly esteemed president, Mr. S. 1 , . "Whitcombe who has been transferred to the South Island. _ Mr. Whitcombe lias, ever since his arrival from the south some three years ago, been a most enthusiastic supporter of the club, and his loss will be much regretted. In the retirement from the Public Service of Mr. F. Waldegrave the club has lost a vice-president of long standing, and one who at all times accorded the club support."
