Sir George Reid, High Commissioner for Australia, in his annual report gives ; an assurance that emigration to Australia will be encouraged and assisted, but four or five years will bo needed before the shipping companies will build the number of passenger steamers necessary to relieve the congestion. He requests the ser--tices of an efficient produce expert, with ' practical knowledge, 6martness, and capac'•'Uγ equal to that of the British eommeroial men.

•Sir George Eeid adds that he gets about ninety thousand words regarding Australia into the press; monthly free of charge. The press would take any number of good photographs, if they could be secured.

Sir George Eeid, before returning to ~ London, stated t&at he intended to recomi mend to the Australian Government that ■ two permanent commissioners should be stationed respectively at San Francisco and New York to develop trade.
