The fire was confined to a storeroom, which was destroyed. Tho kitchen, the passage, and the stairway, also, were damaged. The building was insured in tho Victoria office for ,£2500, and tho contents in tho Royal office for .£IOO.

The Savings Banks Amendment Bill, introduced by the Hon. Jas. Allen, is a short measure of half a dozen operative clauses. Power is given to the trustees of a savings bank to apply money in tho purchase of land and buildings and in paying compensation to any retiring officer not exceeding the amount of salary paid to that officer during the two years preceding his retirement. Provision is made for the appointment of a deputy vice-president to act for the vice-president in case of his illness, absence, or . other incapacity.
