UPPER HUTT TOWN BOARD.

The first meeting of the newly-elected Upper Hut-t Town Board Commissioners was held in the boardroom on Wednesday evening. Dr. Kemp refusing to accept the chairmanship, Mr. K. H. \\ebb was ■ unanimously elected. Other commissioners present were: Messrs. Bengc, Bennington, Burrell, Quinn, and E-obert-son: It was decided to accept the offer of the Hutt County and purchase the sanitary cart (the cause of recent litigation), for 10s; Commissioner-Bongo moved to secure a horse-broom for sweeping tho streets of the township, and the matter was referred to a special committee for report as to cost. Mr. Donald Heid, of- Akatarawa, wrote inviting the commissioners to inspect the bush on his. property adjoining the site where the 'water scheme is shortly to bo operated, as it was just possible (failing the board making an offer) that the bush would be felled this summer. After considerable discussion it, was decided to ask the opinion of the board's expert (Mr. LaingMcason) ns to the effect such destruction of surrounding timbers would have upon the-volume of water in Clarke's Creek in the dry periods. Commissioner'; Bennington gave notice to moxe at the next meeting of the board to the .effect: "That in view of the increasing .duties and the extra clerical work necessary to carry out the proposed water scheme (.611.000), tho salary of the Town Clerk be raised forthwith, and his position made permanent in conformity with similar positions elsewhere." Commissioner E. H. Webb gave notice: "That in future a civil engineer bo engaged to give estimates, and prepare plans of all undertakings beyond those ordinarily accomplished without, expert assistance, in order that the' Town Clerk's services bo not disturbed as heretofore in the- taking of levels, etc., thus giving undivided attention to .oifiijo work solely."
