INSTITUTE OF ACTUARIES.
An advertisement appears in this issue in .regard to the examinations in connection with (he Institute of Actuaries of Great Britain and Ireland, which will be held in Wellington in April next. Mr. J. H. Richardson, F.F.A., F.1.A.V., the institute's representative in New Zealand, will act as supervisor. Mr. Richardson will be glad if any intending candidates will call and see him with respect to the syllabus, and he will afford auy information that may be.desired. Tho examinations are in four parts. Part I relates to pure mathematics; Part II to life contingencies, book-keeping, and finance; Part 111 relates to the. compilation of. mortality, sickness, accident, and other statistics, and the deduction of tables therefrom, the valuation of the liabilities of life and accident insurance (companies,, distribution of surplus, and the calculation of rates of premium for insurance; Part IV relates to the law of contract, that of real and personal property, and that of life insurance generally; to the calculation of rates of contribution for friendlv societies, and pension funds, life assurance accounts, banking and finance, and investments. The practical valuation of life interests and reversions- is also dealt with. The passing of Parts I and II entitle a .■person to the degree of associate, and the passing of Parts 111 and IV subsequently to the degree of fellow.
