Good fair grade New Zealand hemp was quoted in London yesterday at £31 per tan e.i.f.. which is. tho highest, price touched for some three or /our years, and a temporary boom now seems likely. Compared with n, year ago prices are as under — Oet. 5,1913. Oct. 7.1911. £ £ s. d. S-F-G- N.Z 29 19 5 0 F.C. Manila : 29 20 0 0 The.above quotations are taken from the High Commissioner's cable message. Since Saturday there has been a further advance to £31. Rome think that the advance is due to the shortage of supplies from Manila, but this cannot be right because comparing the weekly outputs there is a larger output this year. Wo give below the figures for the past five weeks, with those for the corresponding periods of last year:— 1912. 1911. Bales. Hales. September 7 26,000 25,000 September 14 23,000 20.000 September 21 18.000 25,000 September 28 27,000 25.C00 October 5 26,000 19,000 The figures for this year are larger by 6COO bales, iso that we arc safe in assuming that'the Manila production has not influenced the price. The upward movement is more likely to be due to the shortage of fiis.il, as no doubt the revolution in Mexico will have prevented attention being given to the export of this product. Another favourable factor is larger output, of wheat in Canada, and the United States, necessitating the consumption of a greater amount of binder twine. At all events it is singular that the Canadians should be such persistent buyers not only of the raw New Zealand hemp. but. also of twine. The rope factory at l'etone has dono a fair business with Canadian buyers if current reports arc to be credited. High prices are likely to rule for a. little while longer. A YEAR'S EXPORTS. . The produce year closed on September 50, and the values of the principal products exported during each of the twelve months compared with the monthly returns of the previous year show'as under: 1911-12. 1910-11. £ £ October 614.007 720,383 November 1,146,503 1,041,183 December 1.262,122 2,161,769 January 2/90,165 3,026,016 February 2,984,753 2,315,744 March 2,465,077 2,492,318 April 1,999.808 1,459,331 .
