HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.

. .—t The Huft County Council met yesterday morning, Mr. Wakehaiu presiding. ■ Other members of the council present were: , Messrs. , iGalloway, i Edwards, Whiternan,. .Wclch.-nnd-Howcll; ; •:■•)■■ \\ . ■■•■-•■.''- .'■ The engineer reported that a number- of ■ people wero digging turf from tho roadsides'in tho county. When, questioned, they, replied that they had "permission '■ fromi.the councillors." The engineer went on to say that he had doubts a|; to whether these people really had permission. Ho thought that, if such permission were renlly given, it should bo in writing. If that were dono people, when questioned, could produce their written permits. Councillor Welsh moved: "That any person found removing turf or spoil from the county's roads without permission will be prosecuted." Councillor 'Howoll seconded the motion, which was carried. Considerable discussion took placo on a motion moved pro forma by tho chairman that ,£SO be granted to the Horowhenuft County for tho maintenance of tho Wai-ltanae-Ileikoraugi Road. This road extends throughout Horowhcnua County, and about 21 miles of it lies in the Hutt County. Councillor Howell said that he would oppose any grant on the road. The Horowlienua Council had not put any maintenance metal ou the road since last November, but the council said that tho roadman spent two-thirds of his time on tho road. He (the speaker) firmly believed that the roadman did not spend much of his time on the road in question. "I know," he continued, "that tho roadman does not spend moro than one day a month on tho road. We have three miles of road in tho Hntt County which we are maintaining for tho Horowhenua County. For twenty years they have not asked for any thing. Do not make'an error by offering them any moro money, let it go to a commission. I will vote against any motion for making a grant to tho county." Mr. Welch said that Iho Hutt County's Sart of the road was all right, but tho [orowhenua. County's part was a disgrace. "1 think that if it goes to a commission they would get no support. lam not going (o support this motion." The chairman said that ho had only put the motion in order to open up discussion. Mr. Galloway: "I feel satisfied that we aro entitled to contribute towards the upkeep of this road. I think that if you don't make, tho grant you will fall in." The motion, on heing put to tho meeting, was lost. The Upper Hutt Town. Board advised that their contribution of .£llO towards the cost of tho Moonshino Bridge would bo forwarded when tho work had been completed. It was decided to exchange certain land, nt Moonshine Bridge for a roadway for the convenience of settlers. / A petition was forwarded by Mr. J. B. Tinlay, on behalf of fifteen residents of Day's Boy, asking that repairs to bo effected to Moana, ICereru, and Huia Roads. This was agreed to.
