A SUCCESSFUL DEBATING SOCIETY.

The Vivian Street Baptist Literary and Debating Society closed its winter session with impromptu speeches. The qhairman (Mr. F. M. Hay) briefly reviewed tho work of the session, and showed that there was an all-round improvement in . tho literary, debating, and criticism efforts of members. A pleasing feature of the evening was'a presentation of two volumes to Mr. Hay by Mr! Wilson on behalf of the society. Mr.Wilson stated that their success was due to the energy and versatility of Mr. Hay, and tho co-operation of the members. The society's debating team —Messrs. Hay, Townshend, and Humphreys—had won and defended tho Parliamentary Shield, having an unbeaten record for three years. The present premier position of the society was primarily due to the capable management and debating ability of Mr. Hay. In a brief reply, tho chairman cordially thanked the members for tho goodwill and appreciation expressed in the presentation, and hoped they would continue to exist as a real live institution. With regard to the debating team, he would say that in all his experience, in debate he had never had a colleague the etiual of Mr. A. J. Humphreys at third man.
