NOTES AND COMMENTS.
[Br Gr.ENCOB.I Weights for the first day's events at the Wellington Racins Chili's mooting are due on Priday. The Duncdin Jockey Hub's 'mcetiirc commences at to-morrow and will be concluded on Saturday. W. Kyan, if ho is rataincd to do the eteerinc of the Karamu horses, had his
first w-inniiifr ri<le (his season when he «on th<> Trinl Jlamlicap on Missilt; on Saturday. The winner is a full-brother to Miscount, but ho is not like him in appearance and. certainly, he cannot uallop nearly as well as the runner-up in the last Sew Zealnwl f.'iip. Acceptances tor the Ma.-tortmi Kacins Clubs mcetinp; close on X-'riday next. The Tlastin?s stable, presided over by 1.1. 11. •Cameron, was very much 111 form at tho Xnpier meeting ou Saturday. Horses representing this menage won three races right off the reel, while Throve, another inmate, was second to Diavolo in the Railway Handicap. ' The Australian Jockey Club's spring meeting will be continued at Kandwiek tomorrow.. Tho new. stewards' stand at Mastcrlon. has been completed and will be in use at the spring meeting next week. It is said to amply answer the purpose for which it was ■constructed. The new weighing room and the jockeys' dressing tooiu are also stated to be quite satisfactory. At Masterton last month Jlr. Fred Dorset's mai'o Vite threw a one-eyed foal lo Chatsworth. He is a fine big colt, but it is doubtful if he will be of any use for racing purposes. In futuro Full Date is to figure in tho show ring, and this month he is to bo taken to Hastings to compete in. the weight-carrying hack classes. Tho victoi-v of Ladv Medallist in the October Stakes at Flemington on Saturday will cause the St. Alwyne mare to harden still further in the Caulneld Cup market At tho present time she occupies tho position of favourite with Hoyal Scotch next in demand. Ou Saturday next the pair are likely to meet in tho Caulfield Stake* (one mils' and a quarter) and the'issiie'will no doubt go a long way towards determining their Cup chances. Tho winner of the Caulfield Stakes, however, very seldom wins the Cup, although always one of the favourites. ■ .A .local sportsman received a cable message on Saturday advising him to support Hartfcll for the Epsom Handicap and Duke Footo for the Metropolitan, but. un- | fortunalciy, he overlooked the matter until too late. Vice-Admiral was well backed locally for tho Metropolitan Handicap in whicii ho ran unplaced yesterday. The second edition of "Miller's Sporting Pamphlet" is just to hand, and contains tho latest- performances of horses competing in the big Spring handicaps in Australia. Praleeit (dam of the A.J.C. Derby winner, Cider) recently foaled a filly to the imported horse l'etrillo. "Tod" (E. P.) Young, the successful Australian light-weight, has concluded his apprenticeship with C. H. Xorton, and has been granted a jockey's license (says a Sydney exchange). Although he only weighs ort., Young is exceptionally strong for his size, and has wonderful control over his mounts. He will probably have a rido in this year's Melbourne Cup. A feature of the two days' racing at Randwiclc has been the success of Mr. V. Morton's .colours. On Saturday The Vanquisher carried the colours into second place in the Trial Stakes, and a little later Hartfell won the Epsom Handicap for" Mr. Merton, while another of his horses, Aurofodina, dead-heated w-ith Duke Foote in the Spring Stakes. Two of yesterday's and Hallowmas—also carried the pink and pale blue hoops of Mr. Merton. When tho last mail left England, D. Maher had ridden 78 wiuners and F. Wootton 77 for the present season. E. Carter, who rode United Kingdom to victory in. the Steeplechase at Kandwiek yesterday, went specially from Melbourne to take the mount. When the Australian mail left for Wellington last week, Duke Foote was favourite for the Metropolitan Handicap, nine points ahead of tho second favourite. In viow of his dead-heat in the Spring Stakes, he would start a very warm favourite indeed in yesterday/s race. Wythe cabled account, his backers could not have experienced any anxiety during tho race, as the Duke seems to have been well placed throughout, and was clear of trouble when the fall occurred. He seems likely to keep at the head of the -Melbourne Cup quotations from now until the day of tho race. ■ Tho Xew Zealand jockey, A. Oliver, has never met with much success when riding at Itendwick, but ho broke' the spell yesterday when ho steered Gigandra to victory in the.Shorts. ' . ~ .. : A Wanganui'exchange states that The' Native, who was recently sold, is' to bo shortly sent to Australia. Koatanui, who won the Guineas in Bris-. bane on Saturday, was bred by Mr. G. M. Currie, at Koatanui Stud. The Soult colt showed promising form as a two-year-old, and, with Simla out of the State, is likely to always prove too good for any of the other Queensland three-year-olds.
