An event which should give local mining ventures a fillip is the notation of the Swastika. Gold Mining Company Ltd.. of which an abridged prospectus will be found in our advertising columns. Tho property comprises some 100 acres on the Jiokihinui Hiver, about 10 rr.iles from Scndonville, and is said to he in the heart of what is known as the great Reefton gold belt, a line of slate country extending from the Blackwater in the south 'o the Jorangi Golden Block in the wnh. In this belt are situated most of the best gold mines of the West Coast, ainuni; them hc'ng the Bla-ckwater. Globe, Progress, Alpino, Welcome, Big Eiver, etc, all of ivnich produced considerable quantities of gr.ld in the past and some of them rank nmi-ng the most valuable mines in New Zealand today. The property, it 'will l>u r wn from the prospectus, lias been favourably ieported on by Messrs. Siincy try and J Bcwiu Wilson. They recommend the expenditure of some £2090 on oertain specified lines which thisifompany proposes to follow. Mr. Fry is too well known in Now Zealand to require, further comment here. Mr. •J. Bowie Wilson is an Australian engineer of standing, member of both Australian and American Institute of Mining Engineers. Bachelor: of Engineers, and a member of tho Institute of Mine Managers. The result anticipated from the above expenditure is that a very valuable property will bo disclosed and that present subscribers may look forward to a sale on highly satisfactory terms to a larger working company. There is slated to be a two-stamp mill 1 on the ground, and quartz can be sent down to it right from the ti'mo of commencing operations, as the leaders and tho big reef have all been opened up. The assays in the big reef are reported to run from 20s. to 245. fifty feet in on the cap of the reef, while sa-mplee of the quartz in which gold was not visible have gone as high as 3oz. 2dwt. 17gr. A sample from the Big Beef, ill which gold was visible went 6oz. lldwt. 2gr. All the leaders show very high-grade ore, ranging in assays from lldwt. llgr. to 17oz. 16dwt. lgr. Tho company is issuing 11.C00 shares at fe. each, and it expects these to be largely oversubscribed. No allotment will be made unless the whole capital is applied for, and the share list will definitely close on or before Monday, October 14. Early application is therefore imperative. Messrs. W. H. FROZEN MEAT. Writing on frozen meat, under date London, August 23, .Messrs. W. Weddel and Co. state that the rapid falling off in demand for frozen lambs, which usually takes place during August, is now being generally experienced both in London and in tho provinces, but values' have not suffered to any great extent, as the small available stocks are fafrly firmly held in view of prospective light shipments from New Zealand durincr August and September, and the probable lateness of the Australian season. A feature of the trade is the absolute lack of inquiry for 0/421b. grade?, buyers finding it almost impossible to f,ell even small quantities of this description at the moment. Tho few Australian and River Plate lambs available are a most difficult sale, and are being offered at prices varying- from 4Jd. up to sid. per lb., according to weight. The stocks of frozen mutto-n in London and the provinces are very .short, and, with a good inquiry during the week, it' has been possible to get slightly advanced prices. Can terbury sheop are .worth 4|d. for up to 681b. grades, and heavier grades about 4Jd. fier lb. Secondary descriptions are sellng at 4d. per lb. Ewes do not realise more than 3id. to 3?d. per lb.. delivered at Smithfleld market, but considerable quantities have been sold on an ex ship basis —steamers just in—at 3/IJ-16d. per lb. In fact, the position of mutton is that almost as much is obtainable ex store and ex ship as delivered at market. Australian eheep sell at 4 l-16d. for small weights. There are no medium or heavy weights to be obtained, and small ewes are firm at about 4d. River Plate mutton selloi steadily at 33d. to 4d. per lb. There Is a considerable quantity of Australian beef available, and sellers have been anxious to make progress. With, however, the only moderate supplies of Australian and River Plate beef available, and with the high prices Tilling for chilled, Australian beef is coining in for a. better inquiry, and prices close at a shade higher on tho week. Australian fores are quoted at 2 15-16 d., and hinds 3fid. to 33d. per lb.New Zealand fores, 3d.; hinds. 33d. per lb • Eiver Plate fores, 3d.; hinds, 3iid. to ii. per lb. Chilled beef closes at 3Jd. fores, and sisd. hinds."
