ON THE MOUNDS.

SPORT WITH THE RIFLE. : - SEASON OPENS. Since March, last the echoes at Trentham rifle rango have slept, and sheep and cattlo hnvo grazed unconcernedly over (he mounds, unconscious of any desecration. On Saturday, afternoon the echoes were awakened once more, and it fell to a politician to fixe the first, shot of the 1912-1913 soason at "Tricky I'renthnm." Arrangements 'had been made that the occasion should bo graced with some ceremony, ami the committee of. the Ivarori Eifle Club invited members of Parliament to visit the range and fire a Parliamentary match. .The Horn Jninos Allen (Minister for Defence) and other members of the Government wore also invited, but a Cabinet mooting intervened, and they were unable to come. * In - the' absence of the Minister for Defence (who sent a message of good, will),;Mr. A. S.-Malcolm, M.P. for. Clutha, fired the first shot, which was also his sighting shot in the Parliamentary match. Sir.'Malcolm, by-the. way, had the honour of making top aggregate ecore in the two-range match (54), while Mr. A. E. Glover,..\l.l>. for Auckland, kept the flag 'flying for his Qiieon City in the North by aggregating 43 for the two range 3 of the* match. 'In formally, declaring tho season at Trentham to have been duly opened, Mr. Malcolm thanked tho Karon Club for its kind invitation to members of Parliament, and hoped that tho season would be a very successful one. Tho speaker also complimented members of rifle clubs generally-upon their patriotic service* t_o' the country, and assured then) of his sympathy and support. Messrs. W. H.'D: Bell, A. E. Glover, and D. Buick, mem-, bors of Parliament, nlso spoke. After tho shooting was over for the afternoon, two interesting little functions toOkiplace. Meinbersof the Highlanders' ■Rifle- Club presented Lieutenant-Colonel.C. D. -Macintosh (Retired List), for many years Hhe popular "skipper" of the old Highland Eifles Company of the volunteer ,days, and in later years senior major'of ■the Wellington EiHs Battalion, with a ,)iair of gold sleeve links, as a mark of ;«steem from tho club, which was organised during the winter recess from ex-.-'iHeiiibors of the old corps. V The Kiirori RiHe Clubmen similarly honoured Mr. -W. H.'Field (patron of the club, and in his political life on ardent supporter of the sport of rifle shooting and concessions to shooting men) -with a card-salver,, suitably inscribed, as a souvenir of the occasion. ~. ; PiiFLE CLUB. ';//; ; PARLIAMENTARY TEAMS' MATCH; An "auspicious, opening" aptly describes the commencement of the Karori Club's' 1912-13 season. A number of members , of Parliament visited the Tfentham • range' for fhf occasion, and a Parliamentary teams' match was arranged, in which a team of 10 membors representing constituonoies in the North. Island tried conclusions against 10 members from the South Island. The Hon; Mr. Allen, Minister for Defence, was unable to be present on ac-count-of ft Pabinet meeting, and in his absence Mr. A. S. Malcolm, the eenior member of the visiting party, signalled the opening of the season by firing the first shot from the 300 yards mound. Ho received a round of applause on registering a. "bull's-eye." This he followed ilp with two more "bulls," and he finished the range with a score'of 33 out of the possible 35—tho. highest score made on the range during the day. At the conclusion of the first range, the South Island representatives had-established a lead of 29 points and a- substantial victory seemed almost assured. At the 500 yards range, however, the tricks for whioh Trenthani is so well known wore very much in evidence, and the North Island .team (Mr. A. E. Glover in particular, ■who scored 30 points out of tho possible' ,35) negotiated the difficulties to such.an extent as to overhaul their opponents' lead and to secure a majority of five points, the total scores reading: North Island; 315 points; South Island, ' 310 points. After the match the . visiting ;members were entertained by the meiu : ']bers of the Karori Club to afternoon tea, during , which the club members. availed themselves of the opportunity of making a presentation to their patron, Mr. W. : H. Field, as a mark of appreciation of ■Mt." FioldV endeavours in. the interests 'of the club and of riflemen generally. ' Mr. A. S. Mfllcolm, in speaking onto-, 'half of the visiting members or Parliament, referred ;.to; tho Spirit in which rifle shooting had heen taken up by tho country'* citizens, ■ As a form-of sport, rifleshooting was one of the cleanest,. nud one of immense value to the community, it required those who participated in : it to maintnin a high degree of.pnysicßl fitness. •' ■ ■ .

■ Mr. D.' Buick (intr Mr.- A. E, Glover also made brief and appropriate.speeches, nnd the function terminated with threo 'cheers (called for by Mr. Glover) for the •defeated eriiitherners.
