About eighteen men arc alcctol, and I; ,ve decided to approach the lire Jio.u-d with a request that the present superintendent bo removed. J-ne executive of the Timaru branch, of the inrmers Union, after hearing 31ft K. Evans, of North Canterbury, has decided to urge local members of Parliament to use their luiluenco to get steamers bringing immigrants to call alternately at a South Island port first. Mr. Evans stated that the last two boats had each brought 100 passengers, but only two pas' seiigers by each came south. The, North Island got them all. Ihe.president and vice-president of the New Zealand Alliance met the local leaders of the movement last night. A programme of campaign was adopted, and a resolution was passed that an effort be made to secure two thousand electors' pledges not to vote for a candidate nt an election who will not undertake to do his utmost to remove the unfair handicap in regard to the issues of No-License and national prohibition.
SUMMER SPORTS BEGIN; Christchurch, October 5. Ihe weather is fine and warm for the inauguration of summer sports. The rowing season was opened this afternoon with a procession of boats on the river. The cricket clubs are holding a formal opening,. and tennis and bowling clubs' ore similarly startiDg the season's operations. MOUNTAIN HOUSE OPENED. _ New Plymouth, October 5. Ihe new North Egraoiit mountain house was formally opened yesterday by his Excellency Lord Islington, who was entertained .at luncheon there. In spite, of several weeks of incessant bad weather, sixteen motor-cars reached the house, which is over 3000 ft. above the sea level and nineteen miles from.New Plymouth. ,The house is'of concrete, is splendidly furnished, and lighted by electricity.
