THE CLAIMS FOR RELIEF, ( vV : " SOME STATISTICS. '■ The Titanic relief fund was reported in Buly to amount to £Wl,fffl), which was exclusive of the funds in the hands of the Lord Mayor, of Liverpool,' the-Mayor of Southampton, and tie "Daily-Telegraph." The-Mayor of Southampton stated at a meeting of the committee that, of-the 673 members of the crew wno were lost, 535 appeared .to belong to Southampton; and. 138 to other places. Of the Sonthamp- ■ ton'crew, 403 relatives had been traced there, and 132 had removed and were being traced. The list showed 227 widows, , 363 child Ten under 14; 75 over 14; and 2250 (?) dependents. . ■".-■•'■ :
Sir William Soulsby said that of 819 .■passengers reported as families of 411 had; so far, made claims.' Of these ,223 .-.wire British., 14 Austro-Hungarians, 18 Belgians, 33 Bulgarians, three Danishi one French, ono Italian, 15, Norwegian, 19 Russian, 71 Swedes, five Swiss, and ten' Syrians; The families represented by these, 411 claims wore 113 widows, 202 children. 397 parents, and 460 pther relations —1172 persons in all. In addition, from 60 to 70 applications were expected , from other Syrians and from 30 to 40 from Other Aufitro-Hungarians. There'were, still, over 300 passengers in: respect ■of whom no claims Had as y«t been • made. The cases of American sufferers were bein? adequately dealt with in New York and elsewhere. Large numbers of. claims had also come from survivors—both crew and passengers—who had lost property in the disaster. • It was'referred to the Public Trustee, the Hon. Harry Lawson, M.P., and the Town CleTk of Southampton to bring up a scheme, after obtaining actuarial assistance, for dealing with the cases of the crew..' ...
