NOTES 6> T THE BACING, (B7 Tehrraph.-Special Correspondent.) Hastings, October 2. Toe spring meefcins of the Hawkefi Bay Jockey Club Ts-a& held'in riorious wea.tber, and before an average attendance oi tne public. The going was splendid, ana somo fast gallops were put up.. Daring the day tnc stewards met bvice. One ingatin? was to inquire into the j reason why the wronjT name was posted as.to tic rider of Hinomanu, Camoron being written instead of Young. The other meetioc was to inauiro intn, tfm failuro

of Marimba to leave the mark in tho Hack Race. The evidcucc of the starter and tho rider was called, but no action wa3 taken. There was n grand finish in tho Guineas, and the. judge decided in favour of Bon Ton by half a head.

Tho Hack Hurdles provided a "turn up" when Otatara—a Hood-looking brown gelding by Gold Reef, and much resembling £1 Dorado—took charge half a uiilo from home, and won nicely. Faunus was ridden by J. Dccrey, but was unfortunate enough to get into nil the trouble that occurred. Bnndaloro made' tho pace for a. mile, when ho was dono with. Golden Loop was heavily backed by his connections, but he jumped badly at forao c'f tho fences, and was early in trouble. Strathmoira was never tlungcrous, but Sleaemnbo was on hand the whole way, and jumped well. Thore was a bad mix up at tho start of tho Maiden Handicap, and, with the exception of Facsimile, Kod Book, Mamikau, and Hinemaau, tho field was badly jumbled up when tho tapes wero released. Down the back tho two last-men-tioned horses were-together in behind the othor pair. Manakau got round first, while Young (on Hineroaiiu) delayed his run till well into tho straight. Getting clear then tho bay filly swooped down and smothered Manakau, who had to bo ridden right out to secure second place from Kinbombi. The last-named is very useful, and will be heard of again. Hvl it not been for the poor start to-day he might have won. Multiply (improved by his race in tho Wanganul Guineas) scored decisively in the yiaxmero Handicap. Tho second favourite, Marimba, was left at the post, hut tho others moved off fairly well, lull down tho back by Diavolo. lhe top weight shook off horse after horse, tut. at the bottom of the straight Multiply challenged him, and, running on well under his light weight, ho won very comfortably. The winner is in the Now Zenland Cup, and is' regarded as a »»r« runner. Mcrton finished well, just clear of Pot Luck, who was troubled by the distauce. The others wero well back. The Guineas field was certainly a small one, but tho duel witnessed between tho first and second horses could not have been better. Tho judge gave his decision ns half a head, and this after the, pair had been locked together the whole way up the straight. After one false t<art the held was set going and Bon Ton acted as pacemaker for two furlongs, when Yumg stopped him rather abruptly. llnsknyne then got a conplo of lengths advantage, while Sir Daniel also headed Bon Ton Tho last-named closed at the bottom of the straight, and then began a struggle botween Haskayne and Bon Ton similar to what has bwsn witnessed in this race on many previous occasions. First one and then the other gained an advantage, but it was only small at any time. Bon I Ton seemed to falter fifty yards off the post, but ho struggled on well, and got tho verdict. Haskayne nnt up a splendid performance, but Sir Daniel was outclassed. It is a rather extraordinary fact, that the Guineas have always pro Tided a good raco from a spectacular point of view no matter how small ttna the field. Seahorse and Explosion fought their memorable battle in 1S!)9; Gold Crest and Elevation did Ukowiso 111 1901 i Kopu ■ narrowly defeated Gold Lace and Aborigine in 190S;- and Miscount, lioyil Scotch, and St. Potersburg finished wild in heads of each other last season. Owing to a meeting of stewards being hold the two-year-olds were late in leaving the paddock, and in consequence a largo amount of money was-snut out ot the machine in tho Stokes. There was a Ion" delay at the barrier.due to Pursofiller breaking through the tnties and Subduer rofusin? to join tho field. At the barrier rise Merry Roe went out, while Tatterley king badly. The latter put in a great run and was second into the straight. Finishing on well, ho cut down Merry Roe fifty yards off the post, and won very easily/ Culture was a poor third, and Lyrique was next. The winner is good, and is likely to be better later on as be is on tho big sideyet. Culture will also improve, as she is a very late foal, and looks far from ready. Lyrique was disappointing, and tho others ran as was expected of them. Tatterley should be well able to take the place of 'Jason, who has gone wrong. Tho Spring Handicap proved to be the best of good things to Cork, who took cl'.aigo a furlong from home and'won by 1 .length.. Mangaroa ,wa»i.,a hot .favourite, 'but she is not a light"bdy's mount: After being well.placed at the six furlongs sho failed to run on. Goldfinder ran u really gopd raco, and is coming back to form once more. Ho was in his old position of second. Routine was in a good position the whole way, but she could nut. stall off tho finishing run of Goldfinder. Sir Tristram.was close up fourth, well clear of the remainder of tho field. Bad luck at tho barrier beat Mamtau in tho mile Hack Raco. At the start Pantbea and Divinia led from' Peary, bul the last-named lost his position early, and fell right back. Across the bottom of the courso, Manitau, who had come from a long way back, joined Divinia. Th" latter retired in the straight and the effort told on Manitau soon after. He failed to withstand a strong challenge by Fair Average, who won nicely. Easy finished very, fast, and just missed second place. Tho remaindor of the field wero badly, strung out. Bobrikoff was saddled up in tho Fiml Handicap, and on all sides it was admitted that, he looked nrach more forward that was the oaso last-year at tho same time. Lord Soult, who has outlived his sphere of racing usefulness, was amongst the field, and showed a lot of pace for four furlon?s. The race is easily described, for Oiir King, dashin?-to the front soon after tho tapes were released, never looked . like being caught and won decisively. Bobrikoff finished on well, and Just missed second place. Allurement ivas one ot the last, to finish. -

"HIGHDEN" HORSES IN SYDNEY. Private advice received yesterday from Sydney states that the four horses that are to carry the Hißuden colours at the \ J.C. spring meeting arc all doinsr well in their training. B ron3 ° is simp" l ? m a most attractive manner and 111 tho Spring Handicap at Roschill is considered to have been most unfortunate in finishins outside the placed horses .who wore only separated by a long neck, lhe New Zealand filly is to run in the &nnns Stakes on Saturday and in tho Metropolitan Handicap on Monday. Ermonsarde, though galloping well, doss not tako kindly to the right-handed ping. She will not raco until the second day when she will bo a competitor in IJIO Shorts, six furlongs. . Both tho two-year-olds-Adelicia. and Gerberga—are in great heart. The Mara will leave on tho return journey to V\ cllington on Saturday week, October U. A.
