A CONFERENCE POSTPONED. (Br Telegraph.—Press Association.: Christchurch, October 2. '. At the last meeting of the executive of the North Canterbury Farmers' Uniou, the president (Mr. 0. Shent) announced that a conference would bo held to-day to discuss the whole question, of homes ■for country workers. The conference was to have been held in the Provincial Council Chamber, but empty desolation was all that met the gaze of tho reporter. InJuiries made among the officials of tho .arid and Survey and Agricultural Departments did not result in much enlightenment, but it was ascertained that Mr. Lovnas (Secretary for .Labbnr); who was to have addressed the meeting, was on ./his way k> Auckland. Later.on Mr. Sheat was seen, and he explained that he had received a letter from Mr. G. AV. Leadley to the effect thnt Miv Lomas, who had asked the writer to make all the neosssary arrangements for, the conference, had suddenly announced his inability to attend the meeting, no reasons being given. Mr. Lcadlcy was apparently .1 little disgusted with tho bungling of tlic affair, and hinted that someone else could undertake the job next linie. As a consequence, tho conference has been postpone!-indefinitely.
