__ The parishioners of the Church of the Sacred Heart will tender a social of welcome to tho Rev. Father M'Menamin, it the schoolroom, Britannia Street, on , Thursday, October 9. Father M'Menamin .is expected to arrive in I'etoho shortly.
The Melbourne cricket team, which Is to pay a visit to the Dominion this season, will play a match against the Pctone eleven on the- locnl recreation ground provided the Petone team can raise the necessary .guarantee, which will be in the vicinity of .£3O. The secretary is at present looking up guarantors. At the Lower Hutt Bowling Pavilion on Monday night a successful euchre party aiid social evening, organised by the croquet members, was held. About 60 guests were present, and after on enjoyable round of euchre, itenis were given.- by Hisses Knights, and Shearer, and Messrs. Bell, Hill, .Rishworth, and Hendry. Mrs. Rishworth arid Miss Hill played the accompaniments. Supper was provided by the. kdies' committee, of which Mrs. Yeats was secretary. The proceeds will go towards the cost of the new croquet pavilion.
The managers of the Petone Technical School met , last night, those present being:. Messrs. Thomson (chairman), Roots. Castle, Hope, Duncan, M'Ewah, and M'Kenzie. It was reported; that Misses Leavey and Fleet held the highest marks for attendance. It was resolved to hold an open night in three weeks' time. On tho motion of the'chairman the, secretory was instructed to forward the remunerative assistance to the various bodies concerned. Tho director reported that everything in connection with the various classes was progressing very satisfactorily. To da'e there were 180 pupils on the Toll, including 20 senior • free-place, and GO junior free-place pupils. The.capitation was estimated at iITO. The claims made for this year amounted to JEI9B IDs. Id., of which =£117 16s. 9d. had already been passed for payment: Reports on freeplace scholars for the second quarter have been dispatched, and in most oases nothing but satisfaction was shown. The, report, was adopted.
A special meeting of the Petone Fire Board was held at noon yesterday in Wellington. Pre-ent: Messrs. Mothes (chairman), Kempthome, White, Smith, Short, and Piper. The meeting was called to consider tho question of Mlpply of electric current, for the lighting of part of the new station, and the eletric alarm system. Provision hod been made to continue tho, use of current supplied by the Gear Company, but since then the Tele-, graph Department has declined to allow the u=3 of the .telegraph poles to carry the , nece?ary cable, which, if tho original pro- ; ptisa! had been adhered to, entailed the expenditure of some JXr> for poles. An' ■alrcrnntivc'propisal was made by Mr. Dnwson, electrician, that the board should instnl its own generating plant, which he estimated would cost .£45. After he hnd explained his proposal, and from which it appeared that, the annual cost closely approximated the annual cost of the original proposal under the altered conditions, on the. motion of Mr. Short, if. was agreed that the proposal to in*tal a generating plant be adopted, ami that tho offeT of Mr. Dawson to instal en me at a cost not exceeding JMS bo accepted. Tho local members, with Mr. Kempthorne, •were appointed a committee- to draft n proposal dealing, with the position and salary of the superintendent and submit same nt the next meeting of the board.
