YOUNG MEN & FASHIONS OF 1830

STRAPPED TROUSERS AND SIDEWHISKERS. There is every indication that the smart,' ly-dressed young men of tho West End of London intend to bring about a revival of the fashions of 1830, tho period of pic turesquo dandyism (says the "Daily Muil"). Already eide-whiskers. stock and trousers strapped uuder tho l>oot hava, mado their appearance in the streets. Between tho hours of eloven and one last Saturday (August 1") no fewer than five fine examples of the new fashion in side-whiskers wero scon in tlio Burlington Arcado. - • But there are other signs of tho return of men's fashions to the picturesque days o£ dandyism. The collar, or, to be strictly accurate, our itcclc apparel, has submitted to the subtle influence of time, and tho "twice round" bow tio prominent in the windows of West End outfitters is nothing, if it is not an evolution in the direction of tho gold-sprigged stock of satin wliich adorned our great-grandfathers. _ The collar, after luiving climbed to its three inches of starched pride, is becoming moro ; modest in appearance and making way for a display of silk and satin, With a jewel therein That would serve for a drumstick as well as a pin. Tho fashionable West End tailor is lesi swift in complying with the spirit of modernism. . But tho spirit is there, though it is more apparent in tho newer cut of legwear than ill that of coat or waistcoat. Tho trouser is becoming narrower and more tapering, closing around tho ankle, and in sotno few cases already strapped over tho boot as in tho fashions wliich prevailed from 1830 to about 1860. Th# early volumes of "Punch" (which, first uppearoa in 1841) contain many amusing il- ,. lustrations of thom as well as caricatures or their extravagances. Another change no less startling is the disappearance of the crease, tho bano of the valet's life. Here again wo havo a return to tho days of yore, nnd though the waistline has not yet moved perceptibly higher, a tailor in Conduit btreet stales that this change may bo the neit step in tho direction of 1630 fashions.
