HOSPITAL WIM THE CUP. [■: ' ) CLOSE OF 1912 SEASON, v In heavy rain and on a 1 sloppy ground at No. 12 • Miramar Hospital defeated Y.M.C.A. by 2 goals to nil; and have thus secured the Charity, Clip as ■ well as the championship for 1912' season. Undoubtedly, the men from Porirua deserve congratulations for their ■ success this year. ■They have deserved their win and have played well throughout without losing a match. On the other hand T.M.C.A. .deserve great credit for tho position'they havo attained in cup competitions, and, al- . though they were beaten on Saturday they were by no means disgraced. :> Indeed, at times it looked as if they were going to snatch a victory, but tho defence of Cock- . .burn, in goal.ior Hospital, as weU,-ias;the fine defensivo powers-of-.-•Hospitol-'s-tback .division, proved too 'good for the wearers • oi the shirts of .many colours. . ■■. . ;About 200 people journeyed out,to see the game and itisisafo to say .that they were, not disappointed.; It w,as a willing go from start to finish, and on occasions both teams showed : what. they were capable, of. In passing it .must conceded that the outstanding men.on both 6ides were Hnllis, in goal for Y.M.C.A., and tho splendid 'keeper Cockburn for Hospital. Honours weTO easy where' they were concerned.. In conclusion, it might be said that tho (core does, net indicate the play and the opinion was freely expressed that a draw would have indicated the positions of the teams when'tho whistle blew as a signal to close tho last game this season. Hospital Draws First Blood. ■ From the outset Hospital placed their opponents on the defensive, and Hollis had an anxious ten minutes in goal. He came up to expectations, however, and , cleared many attempts in fino-style.. It appeared as if the Young Men were keeping something up their sleeves, so to 6peok, ; for presently they secured and swooped down : on tho visitors' goal in a . body. The situation looked critical, but Cockburn was responsible' for a splendid save by punching out. Back came Hospital with, a rush, and Phillips put in a shot which looked like a certain score, but again Hollis saved well. Still pressing, Hospital certainly .looked dangerous, and it'was only the tine. defensive play of the ■.' Y.M.C.A., rearguard that saved a score. Presently' Boots had a shot, the ball just .clearing the bar. Play became fast and open, and some good passing was indulged in on both, sides. ..Y.M.C.A. managed, to work the ball down on tho right wing, as tire result of which a corner was nearly placed to account. With a combined rush play was transferred to the opposite end, and here Phillips gave Hollis one of the hottest attempts of.tho match. The wily • 'keeper saved a goal on the second time of handling the ball: Excitement ran high when Y.M.C.A, took the leather down to Cockburn. Baker put in a.beautiful shot which Cockburn saved amidst applause. Even, play followed for a few murates, neither side; appearing- to have tho advantage. Then came the' first scorn of the match. Boots, centre-half for Hospital, secured in a good position, and placed the ball well into tho goal-mouth. It appeared to hang-in the air for a moment or .two, and Hollis tried his best -) to savo a goal. It was a ticklish- shot, and the 'keeper made several attempts to clear. During this time, however, tho ball struck the side post, and rebounded, into $he field of play. Bishop (Hospital), be. ing handy,,put it through. Hospital, 1; Y.M.C.A., nil. Y r .M.C.A. were pressing their opponents hard when half-time was called. Second Spell. .The opening stages of the second half were devoid of any incident save that both :.teams appeared to be resting on their . oars./ Hospital were not playing up to reputation, and .after a time Y.M.C.'A. took advantage of this. On at least two occasions goals looked certain, but 'bad shooting spoilt chances! Soon, however, tho men from Porirua appeared to wake up, and Bishop compelled Hollis to save a good attempt, ot goal. After oiie or two excursions into Hospital's territory, Y.M.C:A. wero put on the defensive! The backs played capitally,) nm!_ saved the situation time and time again. Eventually Bishop was again responsible for o. clever shot. Hollis dived for tho ball, and just managed to save it _ from going over the goal-linn. Alter this Y.MX'.A. took a. hand at attacking, and Cockburn saved what appeared to bo a certain goal in fine style. Give and take play now took place, the ball travelling up and down the field at. a groat: rate.' Y.M.C.A. wero out for a win, and Hospital wero out to save defeat, and the samo became most exciting, despite a heavy shower of roiii. Soon, however, the seal was put on tho last match of tho season, when Hospital were awarded a- penalty kick for.hands. Boots, faking tho kick, landed, an unmistakable goal, making the scores: Hospital, '2;. Y.M.C.A., 1.
