WELLINGTON RACING CLUB, THE ANNUAL MEETING, . FUTURE GAMING LEGISLATION; PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS. Tlio annual meeting of members of the Wellington Racing Club was hW in the Chamber of Commerce last night. lur. ,J. B. Harcourt presided, and there wero about' forty members present. The annual report (already published) and the balance-sneet were adopted. Government Tax. In moving tho adoption of the report, the president said that the results of tho year wero the best since .1909. Referring to the Government tax, which showed an increase of 10s., he said: "It must bo obvious to members that this is a very serious item ; in our balance-sheet. The tax is levied whether we make a profit orf loss, and for a club handicapped as ours is by a heavy dobt, tho amount paid for this year's tax seems excessively heavy. Were this tax not levied, we should be abol to increaso our stakes by about 33 per cent." After referring in detail, to the year's, figures and' comparing them with those of previous years, Mr. Harcourt went on to say:— y "This club, in common with other sporting clubs, is indebted to some extent to a. league recently formed throughout New Zealand, called tho New Zealand Sports' Protection .League, the objects of which are to preserve'as much as possible the freedom of the people to enjoy their own particular sport in their own way, and as the racing community has been seriously attacked, from time to time, members will realise that this is a move in the right direction, and well worthy of our continued support. Wellington's Racing Days. "There is another matter to which I should like to call your attention, and that is the number of tho totalisator permits allocated within a radius of 35 miles of Wellington. To show how unfavourably we compare with the tliree .other iarjjo centres, I may mention that on talcing a radius of 35 miles from the post office in each town, phristchurch lias U totalisator permits, covering 29 days' racing and trotting; Auckland has 13 totalisator permits, covering 30 days' racing, and trotting; Dunedin has 8 totalisator permits, covering 10 days' racing and trotting;,and Wellington has 5 totalisator permits, 10 days' racing and trotting. With these figures'before them, the Racing Commission, you will remember, reduced our racing days by one. So far we have made no effort to recover this day, but I wish to draw attention to the. injustice which has been done, and to express tho hope that the executive of tho club will mako it their business at tho first opportune moment to see that this unwarranted reduction is reinstated.. The Double Totalisator.
. "Beforo closing I should like to draw your attention to tho fact that bookmakers are now no longer permitted to attend race meetings in their professional capacity, and had tlie Stato in its wisdom seen fit to permit the double totalisator to bo used on racecourses, the bookmaker would bo as extinct as the moa. This is another matter which must not bo lost : sight of when future gaming legislation is -considered. ■It must bo patent to you that tho existence of tho double totalisator practically puts'an bnd to all double betting except on racecourses, and further it,protects in,a measure largo betters against themselves, just as in tlie same manner, the single totalisator docs. The odds obtainable on the machino are tho current odds creatcd by the public themselves, and if the winning combination :is not backed the public get their money back. Could anything bo fairor-'than .this'?And yet .the.;machine r by Parliament/"Snd,hiiiT for this, cases such as Tile Rover case in Christchurch the other day, by which a largo of people lost their money without having a chance to win, would never have arisen. (Applause.)
Votes of Thanks, Dr. Herbert moved a vote of thanks to 'Mr. : W. H. 1 Turnbull for his efforts in bringing into'existence tho system of stipendiary, stewards. In speaking to the motion, Dr. Herbert paid a tribute to Mr. lurnbull's unremitting efforts to establish tho, system which he believed would tend to purify the sport. Mr. J. J. M'Cirath, in seconding the ' motion, expressed strong disapproval of tho present system of electing the stew- ' ards of the club. 'Ho considered they •should bo elected by vote at the annual ■ meeting, .and members not present should be debarred from voting. Mr. M'Grath spoko' in high terms of Mr. Turnbull's work in the interests of tho club, and of racing generally. He hoped Mr. Turnbull would be elected for another year. ■ On bciny put*to the meeting, Dr. Her,tort's motion was carried by acclamation. A special vote of thanks was passed to .'Messrs. J. W. Abbott, William Barton, E. C." Batkin, F. IT. D. Bell, A. S. Biss, A\'. E. Bidwill, Cricliton and M'Kay, J. G. Duncan, John 'Buthie, Dr. W. K. iylTe, J. B. Harcourt, C. 11. Izard, H. F. Johnston, S. Kirkcaldie, H. J. Palmer, L. C. Pharazyn, H, P. Rawson, C. W. Tringliain, T. S. Weston, for the services rendered by thoin in becoming personally liable as-, guarantors for the sum of each, thereby enabling the satisfactory completion of the Trentham racecourse. fhe minutes of this previous annual general meeting had been confirmed at the first subsequent meeting of stewards. This course was objected to by several members, and on the motion of Mr. W. L. Eothenberg, it was resolved to recommend tho • incoming committee to leave, ,the , matter of confirming the minutes nntil the next annual meeting. C.J.C. NOMINATIONS. NEW ZEALAND CUP MEETING. During the last i'dw weeks he was aljlo to speak. The case was an unusually locg one, This afternoon he died.
[Rotter Mas a well-known hurdle and steeplechase rider of many years' standing. As far back as 1902, lie von the Hnwke's Bay Steeplechase on Lochado-l NOTES AND COMMENTS. IBt Glf.ncoe.j Fields will not bo large at Wanganui to-morrow, and there aro several reaaccount for this. First of all. a groat many trainers do not fancy the Ihursday and Saturday arrangements at present in vogue, as it means that the Jiorses are too long nway from home, and aro unable to start,on their return journey until the Monday. This year it is particularly unfortunate that this should bo so, as there is a meeting at Hastings on Wednesday and at A'apier on Saturday. 1 miners with horses engaged there, and at Wanganui, may select the later meetings. If they havo fresh horses for the Hnwke's liav meeting they must hasten Home to hnish them off. Several prominent owners aro not represented to-day, though they were 011 Thursday. Among them mav be mentioned the Hon. J. D. Orniond, Sir George Clifford, and Jlcssrs. Stead Brothers. Tlio lastnamed took umbrage, so it is said, at the treatment meted out to W. Young, and would not have their horses weighted, Bon Reve, Oxenhope, Brown Owl, and Winning Way were entrained earlv vestorday morning, and sent to Lytielton Lv the Maori last evening. Very heavy rain fell nt Wanganui all yesterday afternoon, and the going will not be good to-day. II: will l>o a case of scouting round for "mud larks" nnd, in the Open Handicap, backers will probably alight in some numbers 011 Kquitas. Certainly the mare is backward, but' her trainer has been very busy 011 her since arrival at Wanganui.. On Wednesday morning she galloped six furlongs, on Thursday mornini half a mile, and, later, she raced over six furlongs. On Friday morning she did fiy.o furlongs at top ,
speed, and later raced again. This makes it apparent as if business is meant.
Though eovoral horses have gono home from Wangnnui a few new ones will be seen out. Amongst them are Mulga Hill and Patriotic—two of T. F. (inddiml's team. Tho pair wero heavily supported for tho double immediately on the appearance of tho acceptances yesterday, and, as both aro good-"mud 'horses, they should do well. Another newcomer is l'hroso, the Australian-bred maro belonging to Mr. G. 1\ Jloore, of liushy Park, Kai Iwi, and trained by A. Hall. So far her only start with the colours up was at the Hunt Club meeting at Wanganui, when she romped home by twenty lengths from the Ladies' Bracelet field.
ICoran is a fresh horse in tho Open Hurdles, and his ability to go through the mud was proved at leilding at Easier when ho won on both days. In tho absence of Silver Cluse, Fashion Plato will no doubt be tho favourito selection in the Hack Hurdles. At .Marlon it was not good going in parts, but she won nicely, and, at Otaki, early this week, she also seemed to act well in tho soft going. Mr. G. P. Moore's s'alo of yearlings will this year tako place 011 November 5 at Christchurch. 111 all, Mr. Moore has eight lots to offer, most of them being by his own siro Signor. Tho Stead Brothers won tho Wanganui Guinea.s at their first attempt, while their lato father (though he tried many times) never succeeded in winning tho raco in question. Bon Revo stayed on well, ami may be a factor to be reckoned with in tho C.J.C. Derby. It is just as well that there aro not large fields at Wanganui, for there promises to be a dearth of jockeys. P. D. Jones, W. Ryan, P. E. Jones, B. Oliver, J. Conquest, and W. Young—all of whom had several rides 011 Thursday—will, for various reasons, bo absent to-day. By the abolition of tho bookmaker the Wellington Racing Club during the past 3*ear lost the sum of .£IOO2 iu bookmakersj fees. Against this, however, the totalisator income showed a net increaso of ■£391J, and had it not been for bad weather at the autumn and winter meetings, it would have shown a much larger increase. > TIIO Avondale Jockey Club's meeting will be concluded to-day, when the Avondale Guineas, for three-year-olds, will bo decided. It is stated that, when Paisano won the hurdle race at liosehill last Saturday, many of the New Zealanders present won substantial amounts, as they backed tho Strowan gelding early in tlie day at long odds. Tho Hawke's Bay Guineas will bo run 011 Wednesday next. Haskayne, prior to running 111 tho Wanganui Guineas, was supported to some extent for the New Zealand Cup. In his address to members of tho Wellington Racing Club fast night, tlw president (Mr. J. li. Harcourt) made, special reference to tho valuablo services rendered to the club during the past year by its secretary, Mr. A. E. Whytc, and al=o by tho caretaker of tho Trentham course, Mr. M'Glashan. Private advice received from Sydney states that Ermengarde ran disappointingly at Tattorsall's meeting a fortnight ago, but as silo subsequently did a really good gallop over seven furlongs, the race did not appear to have done her any harm. On top of this advice, her withdrawal from the Epsom Handicap camo ns a mild surprise, and.it may bo that the G'harlemaguo II filly has gone wrong temporarily. Bronze by all accounts is doing well, and improving with every gallop on tho track, and both of Mr/ Higliden's hy>-year-olds are going along tho right way. The New .Zealand horse, Theodore, is entered for tho Rowley Mile to bo run at tho.HawJiesbury meeting (Sydney) this at"ternoon. During tho past year, tho Wellington, Racing Club devoted over £i 25 to hunt clubs and A. and P. associations. This sum was nearly JMOO in excess of what was spent in the samo direction tho previous year. The jockey that has had most mounts in England this season is C. Trigg. Up till tho time tho last mail left Iho liad been over MO. times in tlie saddle during .tho..raciiig,:.vear.. : ~ Midnight Sun has been entered for soma of tho minor handicaps at the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting, so that his lameness may not bo serious enough to warrant his being written out of tho New Zealand Cup calculations. Tagua, who won a welter mile race at Stockton on August 20, is a half-sister to tho Derby winner, Tagalie. Tho operation of tracheotomy was performed upon her as a foal, but there is no tube in her throat now, and tho wound has completely healed.—London "Sportsman."
