i CRICKET. ! THE WELLINGTON CONTROL. 1 ANNUAL REPORT. The report of the Wellington Cricket Association, to be presented to tho annual general meeting in the Chamber of Commerce' this evening, reviews the principal events of the last' cricket season, the movement for the revision of tho l'iunkct Shield rules (before (lie public quite recently), and the question of improving the ilnsin Reserve, and discusses ' certain proposals connected with the encouragement of young players. • The Basin-What? It had been evident for some years past that the time was approaching when considerable improvements would have to be effected to that portion of the Basin Reservo under our control. Tho condition of the ground last season was such that the committee decide'd that immedi- , ato action, was necessary. After conferi cnco with tho Reserves Conimitteo of the i City Council it was decided to enter into a comprehensive scheme to level and sow practically the whole playing area of the reserve. In financing this scheme, the association was met very generously by the municipal authorities, and assistance was also forthcoming from the Wednesday Association. The unfavourable weather, experienced during tho past winter has greatly delayed operations, and tho committee regrets that the opening of the reserve for play will be considerably delayed in consequence. The benefits ultimately derived however from the'ground being in better condition than that prevailing for many seasons past i should, states the committee, compensate for- the inconvenience arising from tho late opening of the ground. Youna Players. The committee views with grave concern the increasing number of plavers. engaged in matches other than those played under the auspices of the Wellinctun Cricket Association. It is urgently necessary that inducements should be shown to. younger players to encourage tliein to avail themselves of the advantages of the association's competitions and management. The committee therefore, after mature deliberation, lias decided to submit the following proposals:— "That, in future clubs-other than district clubs consisting of members residing within the boundaries of any mo district may, with the permission of the district club, enter teamv for the third, fourth, and other lower grade competitions (if any) without paying subscription or affiliation fee to the Wellington Cricket Association, and only such small tir nominal fee to tho controlling district club, within whoso boundaries tho players are 'residing, as tho executive of such club nioy decide, and being only liable otherwise to the association for the usual ground fees in respcct of championship matches actually pliiyed bysuch club;, such ground fees to b? paid by the chrti to the executive of the district club within whoss boundaries they are situated and by tlm district club remitted to the association.". Unsatisfactory Finances. The committee regrets that it ajain becomes necessary, as was the case last year, to draw attention to the unsatisfactory, financial position of the association. At the end of seasoii IDIO-U ihe liabilities exceeded the assets by .£2ll 19s. fld. and a perusal of the balance-sheet for the.past season will show that the amount has nojr. increased to ,£217 13s. lid. ' At this time last year the overdraft, with accrued interest, was ,£227 3s. lid. and the association owed oilier accounts amounting to >£tS2 7s, 4d., making, a total <.f .240 D lis. 3d. Tho overdraft with interest now stands at .£152 lis. 3d., while other liabilities amount to ,£217 Is. 9d.. making a total of .£370. It is pointed out, however, that the improvements to tho Basin Reserve cost approximately £1"0. Arrears of rent, .£27, was another extraordinary sourco of expenditure. If (he unfortunate necessity for disbursing t.heso amounts had not arisen, the financial position of the association would have shown a'.substantial improvement in coniparisori with that of the previous season. WELLINGTON SOUTH CLUB. The annual general meeting of the Wellington South Cricket Club was held last evening, Jlr. A. A. Georgo presiding. The annual report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. Six new members were elected. The chairman. extended a hearty welcome to Jlr. B. Ivortlang, the Australian cricketer, who has joined tile club, and introduced him to the members of the club. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President/ Jlr. R. A. Wright.; vice-presidents, Messrs. F. Alpe, W. 11. P. Barber, T. J. Bell, Cook, Simmonds, and Osborne, Parlon. A. A. George, H. George, who lias done a good deal in regard to getting the South Melbourne eleven to visit NiZealand, had a few words to sav on the matter. Mr. George stated that tho team is to visit Wellington in January next, and the mid-week association had already arranged livo matches for the visitors in the different centres, but not yet with the local Saturday Association. The Wednesday' Association, he stated, had written io'the Saturday Association in regard to the latfer assoc'iation olfering a. guarantee for a match. "I have been informed," stated Jlr. George, "that the Saturday Association replied that it would only guarantee a sum of =£'50, and that the Wednesday Association would not accent it, as they did not think it . a reasonable sum." The speaker then mentioned that even the Blenheim Association had mado an offer of a guarantee of JIGO. Jlr. George suggested that if the negotiations,/ between the Wednesday Association and the Saturdnv Association fell through, the South Wellington Club could enfer into negotiations with the Wednesday Association with a vie-v to arranging a match. "Tf we could secure this match, —ami I think we could, easily—we could offer 75 per cent, of the net profits, with a minimum guarantee of ,£7O. The match could be easily arranged, with considerable profit to tho South Wellington Jlr. B. Ivortlang said that from, his j knowledge of representative cricket it . would be a snlendid undertaking, if the club arranged this match. "Wp should not miss this opportunity. No live assnciation would let an opportunity like this pa's by them." Jfr. George then formally moved: "That, a letter bo sent to the Saturday Associa- t tion askin? them if the negotiations with 1 vegnrd to the visit of the South Melbourne 1 team with the mid-week association have fallen throuuh. and, if so. tho. South Wellington Hub intends to open up negotiations with the Wednesday Association with a view to arrait!tin{? a mntcll." Jfr. Piurton expressed himself as being slronglv in favour of tho motion. Puiulon was appointed manager of the Institute't. fouiih division teain which is to visit I'almcrston on September 28. Considerable discussion ensued over the question of whero the tinal for tile Charity Cup, between Hospital and Y.M.C.A., should be played next .Saturday. A question was asked whether tlio Hospital Club had notified that they could not come into town to play Y.M.C.A. nest Saturday. It was decided that the Fifth B and Sixth A Division representative match bo played at Miramar No. 1 at 2 p.m. A complaint was raised concerning tram accommodation from Courtenay l'lace to lliramar on Saturday last. It M as decided that tlio secretary write to the tramway authorities informing them that tho final for the Charity Cup would bo played at Minimal* on Saturday, September 28, and also asking for suitable conveyances on that day. Mr. A. Williams gave notice of motion:! "That the colours of (ho W.F.A. be changed from yellow and black shirts to black shirts, with a gold monogram." As an outcome of the hurriedly-con-vened mooting of tho Management Comniitteo last Friday evening, the sub-com-mittee, consisting of Messrs. H. J. Courtenay, J. J. Rebcrts. H.
