HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.
(From Our Special Correspondent.) 1, Yesterday afternoon the Petono Fire Brigade received a call to suppress an outbreak in a six-roomed unoccupied dwelling in Atiawa Street, owned by llr. Wcblcy, of Taita. Owing to tho horse in the fire-cart behaving fractiously, some delay was experienced, and when tho brigade arrived on the sccno tho flames had bson subdued by a party of footballers who had been engaged in a match on the Eecreation Ground. It appears that tho tiro originated in a cupboard in a washhouse which is attached to tho dwelling. About £5 worth of damage was done. It is understood that tho cottnge is insured in the Alliance office, but the amount is not known. Mr. Chas. Gray, a well-known local stage artist, whoso forte is comcdy, was tendered a farewell concert in the Palace Theatre last evening. A programme by Wellington nud local artists was given, and was much appreciated b.v those present. . Mr. Gray leaves for Melbourne at tho end of the week. The officers and committee of the Petono Football Club lake strong exception to the - football report which appeared in Monday's Dominion in regard to tho reference to Daley, and at a recent meeting passed tho following resolution"That this meeting takes exception to the report ■which appeared in last Monday's Dominion re Daly." The Ilutt Borough Council will hold a, special meeting on Monday evening next for the purpose of considering an important report from the engineer, in regard to improvements to tho borough. Councillors will inspect the proposed new works beforo the meeting. A good deal of interest is being taken in the election for tho vacant seat on the Lower Hutt. Borough Council. The candidates are Mr. Dawson, of tho firm of Dawson and Maudsley, indent. . agents, Wellington, and Mr. G. Mumford, of Lower Hutt. Tho election takes placo on Thursday.
