PatoTson, secretary of the Cant terbury General Labourers' Union, takes >■ exception to somo of the statements made I' by tho Hon. W. Eraser, Minister for 0 Public Works, in the liouso of Repret sentatives yesterdny, regarding the trouble between tho contractor for the tunnel at !J I/alto ColeTidge and tho men. To-<lay Mr. 1 Paterson sent tho following telegram to P Mr. Fraser:—"Re Lake Coleridge: I em- '< piratically deny that I informed tho engineer that tho report that the men were s compelled to obtain meals at tho contractor's boardinghouso was untrue. Re ; engine-driver dismissed: The union never complained about the man. Ho holds a certificate." Tho strike still continues. KICKED AND KNOCKED ABOUT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Christchurch, September 25. On Monday nifjht a demonstration was mado by the strikers at Lake Coleridgo against one of the carpenters employed on tho works. He was called a scab, and 1 other obiectionablo names. The man was then kicked and knockcd about until ho had to seek shelter in a contractor's hut, 1 where ho is now quartered. ® A conference took place to-day between ? the contractor and a deputation from tho J. men, but without result, and tho strike continues. a
