The Hon. G. J. Smith, M.L.C., was vesterday granted leave of absence from tho Legislative Council on account of illness in his family.

Captain J. H. Whytc, D.5.0., Mounted Brigade Major, Wellington military district, is exchanging posts for a tern; w" 11 an officer of tho Commonwealth Military Forces, an'd will leave for Melbourne at tho beginning of next month.

Mr. J. B. Clarkson, managing director of J. B. Clarkson and Co., Ltd., leaves on a trip to America and England to-day. At Auckland he will connect with tho Marama for Vancouver, and will proceed straight on to London via New lork. In November he intends to bo present at tho Olvmpia Motor and Motor-cycle Shows, and will also make a point of attending the big motor show in Paris a little later. On his return journey lie will take in tho big American motor shows in .Tnnunry. He expects tn b»absent from New Zenland tor about four months.

Mr. B. H. Price, treasurer of the 'Wellington Bowling Club, who is leaving for Christehurch, is to be entertained by members of the club at the pavilion on Friday evening. . Mr. M. H. Oram was yesterday admitted by Mr. Justice Sim as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court. Mr. E. Kennedy appeared as counsel. Mr. F. J. Evans has been appointed lion, secretary of the Victoria Bowling Club, in succession -to Mr. P. North, who has resigned owing to ill-health. \t St. Eval Church, Cornwall, on August 7, a stained-glass window was dedicated by tho Eev. C. Bridgwater, rector of St. Tudy, in memory of John and Mabel Lock, son and daughter of the Kov. J. Lock, vicar of St. Breward, who lost their lives by drowning in New Zealand on February 13, 1912.
