HUSBAND'S MISTAKE. Mr. Matthew a wealthy cotton broker of Now York, after returning from a dinner party in tho early hours of the morning recently, shot and seriously wounded his wife. Mr. O'Callaghan was sleeping soundly in bed. When awakened by the police the cotton broker exclaimed:' "I thought it was a burglar. I got my gun and shouted. 'Is that you, Lilian? Speak, or if you don't answer I shoot.' 1 heard no reply, and thinking there was a burglar at tho door I shot. Then I found that it was my wife. As I did not know what to do, I went back to bed." At the police station, Mr. O'Callaghan, still under the influence of tho banquet, indulged in frantic expressions of grief. Relatives have testified that tho married life of tho cotton broker and his wife was supremely happy. They were never known to quarrel. ... Mr. O'Callaghan was remanded in custody, pending the-outcome of the injuries to his 'wife, who, the physicians report, has a bare chance of recovery.
