William Birch' recently came to Oakey and claimed her tis hia daughter. The family and . the' girl refused to recognise 'the claim.' The girl disappeared, but returned next nnd alleged that .Birch had jrayiaid and threatened to shoot her •unless she accompanied'him./ Terrified, she consented, and'ho dook her to a place where a large heap Of sticks had been gathered, , ■ and ■ compelled her to .remove most\of her clothes. •, He then , shockingly 'ill-treated heK after. threatening ; to roast lier, on a fire. Ultimately she escaped. '■' . . .'■ The police havo fonnd .the ashes of a fire containing.charred remains and part of a rifle. A'doctor no's .pronounced .the remains to be human, and those of a male/ -..:■■ V ' '
