STRANGE DOINOS IN SYDNEY. AN ARMED. MARAUDER. By Tclssrapli-Press Assoclatlon-Coryrtili* Sydney, September 20. . A man armed with a revolver visited throe hotols in the.city yesterday. At tho first he paid two visits, threatening tho licensee on each occasion. At the second he wns accompanied by two mates. A customer who flashing gold in a parlour received a wound on tho forehead from a knuoklc-dustcrj but fled. The threo men followed, firing one shot,without effect. They returned to tho bar and ordered drinks. The landlady refused to supply them, and the men then departed. Tho climax occurred at. Durack's Hotel, at tho corner of Elizabeth'and Campbell Streets, at four o'clock. A man with his face swathed in a handkerchief, and carrying a revolver, burst into the bar, rushed to the till, and helped himself to the contents. The licensee, aged 72, closed with the intrudor and gripped his wrist. Tho ,ma'n freed himself and decamped. The licenseo pursued and grappled with the robber, whose revolver went off. The sound of tho shot attracted two policemen, who arrested tho man.
Reports of other Tobberies continue to be received. Tho licensee of a suburban hotel was robbed of £02. A Chinese gardener in tho same suburb lost £oQ. In another suburb Masonic jewels valued at •£2O were stolen, and in a third suburb .£25 worth of jewellery was secured. A large number of tradespeople have been, victimised. A man giving the name of a prominent client telephoned an order, stating that a boy would call for goods at a certain establishment. Unsuspectingly tho goods were handed over to tho boy, over XIOO worth being obtained in this way. AN ARREST EFFECTED. (Roc. September 20, 10 p.m.) ■ ~ Sydney, September 20. A man named George Cooling, the perpetrator of the hotel sensations has been before the Court and remanded on charges of stealin'g «£2 at Durack'e Hotel and ma. liciously shooting at the younger Mr: Durnck. Cooling was allowed out on bail on sureties of ,£SOO. He urged that ho had been drinking and was not responsible for his actions. He had not' intended' -to steal or do anything else.
