GLAD WHEN POLICE CAME.

FUGITIVE SEEKS REFUGE IN PAPAWAI. (Br Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Masterton, September 20. A man named Alfred Smythe, alias George Ashton, was arrested, to-day on a charge of theft from tlio person, after an exciting chnso by the police. A mate of Sinytha's reported to tne local police at a Into hour last night that he had been robbed of £li. . Inquiries made elicited tho statement that Smythe had hired a motor-car and had gone to Cartcrfcon. Two constables left here at an early hour this morning, but, on arrival at Carterton, found "the bird had flown." They then proceeded to Groyfowii, and when about tiro miles on tho Masterton side of the latter township they overtook Smythe, who made a dash for liberty. The constables went in pursuit, but Smythe was fleet'of foot, and got clear of his pursuers. He made- off in the direction of Papawai Maori pa Tho constables followed to the pa, and warned the Natives. A littlo later Smytho was discovered by the Natives in a, stable. He was immediately pounced on by a. stalwart darkskin. and held captive until the police, who had meanwhile left for Grcytown, were recalled. Smythe, who had had a mauling at the hands of the Natives, expressed pleasure at the arrival of the police. He will be charged to-morrow morning with theft from the person.
