VICTORIA COLLEGE.
Wh'cn tho Victoria College Council met last night to transact the monthly business, the following wero nresont: Mr. C. Wilson (chairman), the Hon. H. D. 8011, K.C., Sir Robert Stout, Dr. C. P. Knight, Messrs. Wm. Ferguson, A. E. Meek, H. H. Ostler, ,T. G. W. Aitken, A. W Hogg, T. li. Fleming, W. M'Callum, M.P., and C. Watson. According to the financial statement, the sum of ,£762 6s. id. was required, for salaries,'and-.the sum of .£"1 Is. for other payments. After allowing for these, there would be a credit balance of .£904 "s. 4d., and a sum of ,£IO2O on fixed deposit. The Auditor-General, in returning the annual balance-sheet, intimated- that in depositing JCIOOO with a building society the council was acting without 'authority. A letter on the same subject was received from the legal advisers, stating ' that the funds could only be invested in Government, and.other approved securities.—On the motion of Sir Robert Stout, the matter was referred to the Finance Committee,'- with an instruction to withdraw the sum at the end of the current term, and invest it in a Government security. "~ On the recommendation of the Finance Committee, the 'Registrar of the University was granted the use of rooms in the college for the November and December examinations, and also for a conference of professorial boards to be held in November. . Professor D. K. Picken, on behalf of the Professorial Board, wrote with regard to the provisiok (in the council's memorandum to the Government) for an increase of expenditure on the teaching of economics arid history. Tho letter s?id: The board believes that the consequent development .in the teaching of history nt all stages of the arts course, the picssure that, will Iks put upon tcacher-shi-deuts to take a University course in history, and the increasing importance of history as a commerce subject, make it nccessarv that provision should Ire made for separate teaching of economics r.ud history. A committee of the board has gone into the question since Mr. ITogbon s visits' and the board now susgests that the council's statement to the Government he altered in this particular so as lo make provision for a professor ami a lecturer, one of whom should (each l-if-tory and the other economics. • Tl.is would imply an increase of. say, /JOO (for the lecturer's. salory)."-It was dccid-r-1 to forward a copy of the letter to the Government.
