HOT BEAMING ON MAIN ENGINES; Some anxiety was occaeioncd at Wei- , lington when tho Union Company's eteamer Mokoia failed to put in an appearatico from Napier yesterday afternoon. Hlio left tho lluwke's I3ay port at 0.20 p.m. on Monday and under ordinary circumstances should have made port about noon. It was 9.30 p.m. before she berthed at tho Queen's Wharf, however, and iut[uiries on board elicited tho information that the vessel had been delayed off Flat Point for about eight, hours yesterday morning owing to a mishap to a bearing on. tho main engines. It appears that : the bearing in question had given trouble all the wny down tho coast from Auckland. When between tho latter port and Gisborno it became defective and after temporary repairs, the Mokoia managed to reach Gisborne. Hero tho damaged part was taken adrift and more permanent repairs effected. The Mokoia left Gisborne. for Napier at 2 a.m. and arrived safely. After sailinu all went well until tho steamer was ia tho vicinity of Flat Point and hero the white metal in the bearing ran out. This part of tho machinery was disconnected, and the bearins was run up with now metal. Much timo was occupied in fitting it to tho crank-pin, but eventually Iho work was accomplished by the engineers and port was- mado without further mishap. While tho Mokoia was off Flat Point a hard north-west gale was blowing with a fair sea. Tho samo conditions prevailed off Capo Palliser which point woe passed at 5 p.m. yesterday.
