MEDICAL PROFESSION
1— HOW COMPETITION GROWS. (By Telesraph.—Prc.ie Association.) Tlmaru, September 17. In view of tho resignation of Dr. Ussher, a resident surgeon at the hos-. pital (as he intends to enter practice in Timarti), , a deputation from the honorary medical staff requested tho Hospital Board to alter tho system, and, instead of appointing a fully-qualified' man, should appoint students fresh from Duncdin, each for one year as house surgeon, as is said' to be done at the larger centres and at the majority of hospitals at Homo. It was unfair to bring in, every few years, a qualified man to become a competitor in private practice. It was mentioned that nearly all tho doctors in Timaru had thus passed through the hospital, and it iras arirued that tho system proposed would be cheaper, and the work more satisfactory. After discussion tho board resolved to adhere to the prossnt system. A discussion then took place on drawing the lino" in admitting; patients who might be ablo to pay for private treatment An assurance was given that no line would bo drawn against nnyoiio admitted, but, if the patient were ablo to pay the stated charge, ho or she would Ijo'rcquired to do so.
