THE SHIELD'TEAM SELECTED. CRITIQUE OF THE MKX. As the senior men's competition* liavc closed, Saturday was devoted to u trial match, in view of the shield contest against Canterbury next Saturday. The game, as played, lends itself to no description, (wing to the fact tliat the players were changed round from time to time, to aid tho 'seiector's choice. The A team finished up easy winners by 7 goals to nil. 0. Strack, C. Strack, Uoyd 1.2 each) and Dnvies (II being responsible. Allowing for the state of the.ground,' and the overhead conditions, piny was- good, the A team making a bold shoving. The most .pleasing feature) of the afternoon was tho solidness of the half-back line—the In— elusion of hein'g a wise step. The forward line went well together, the combination of the two Stracks. beiuj; much iu evidence. THE HEPJJESENTATIVES. 'The following summary of tho players may be added:— JJwyer (goal-keeper) is an old representative player, on whom (he shadow of "old times" is spreading a little. His place should, on that account, be occupied by Cleave. . . Uaker (right-back) is a. thorough representative. J'layed for Auckland, but has been, under a. cloud in. representative matches;'showed some of his wonted brilliancy on Saturday.. Al'tildowney (left-back): Hardly up to representative form, but thought by soma to bs the best we liavi. , . Not sq jjuod &a C. JDavics, hut more sturdily built, •M'Grcgor (right-half): The finest halfback in Wellington.' Plays very fast hockey; has a happy knack of anticipating the play; hits like Josaop and fields like a Gregory, at cover-point. His proper position is centre-half, but will play well anywhere. . • • Campbell (centre-half). A tried -. and trusted member of previous representative teams; not a brilliant attacker, but very stolid in defence; it heady and cool plnyer whose presence gives his team n feeling of safety. Thompson (left-half): Not a brilliant man, but one who works hard and is never beaten; never shirks his work. Reed (wing-forward): A plnyer of great 'promise; hangs on to the ball rather too long sometimes, b\it is a good shot in the circle. Thoroughly worth-his place. "C. Strack (ripht-iasido) : A man worth his place in any representative tenm; thoroughly unselfish, and always well trained. Keeps going till the whistle sounds. • G. Strack ("bully"): Tho best man in the team; brilliant with his stick; can Ibid the ball in the air; ha? great pace, mid when in the circlo is wonderfully sudden. ... . • G. Davies (left-inside): An old-timer, with the spring of youth in him yet; always worth.-a plnce; has great pace and a quick eye. , Loader (wing): The -speediest wingeij in New Zealand; well known for his splendid centres, and as a man who gives the defending • goalkeeper plenty to think about whenever ho gets in tho circle.
