THE YACHT MATANGI.
IJVELY TKIP FBOM AUCKLAND,
The Auckland yacht M&tangi, which has been purchased by Mr. Henry E. White, of Wellington, arrived in port yesterday ' morning after a somcwhnt eventful trip down the coast. The yacht, in charge of Captain Stentiford, left Auckland on Monday evening last, and had a splendid mil as far as the' East Cape, which was passed at 9 a.m. on Wednesday. On rounding the Cape, however, the wind which had brought her along .ill' good' nt.ylo'l across tho ■Bay■■• of Plenty died away, leaving a very heavy sea, in which the little vessel wallowed for about fifteen hours to such au extent at times •that it was feared some of the spars would snap. Oil' Cape Turnagain a heavy southerly gale was met, and once more Captain Stentiford and his crew of three had a rather anxious lime, but the Mαtangi behaved splendidly. After a dirty night in Cook Strait the Heads were innde early yesterday morning, and she beat up into the harbour during the forenoon. Mr. White went off in a launch, and met the, yacht in the, entrance, and sailed her into the Boat Harbour, where she lies at present.
The Matangi is a. serviceable-looking yawl-rigged craft, built some years ago by Logans, of Auckland. She has threo skins of the best of kauri, and every plank runs the full length of the vessel —(here are no butt'joints. She is painted white, has a graceful clipper bow. carries U tons of lead oil her keel, and'is fluShdecked.
Captain Stentiford is well pleased with tho yacht's sea-going qualities, and stated that she is a craft in which he would have no qualms in sailing round the world.
