GENERAL GRANT'S GOLD
SALVAGE SHIP BEING FITTED OUT
AT SAN FRANCISCO.
(By Toleeraph.-Prcse Associations , Dunedin, September IS. Information has been received here that Mr. E. C. May intends to make another effort to secure the treasure from tho ship Genera! Grant, which was wrecked at the Auckland Islands many years ago. A letter ivom Mr. May, written from San Francisco, contains the information that he has purchased a three-masted sailing ship, with a 150 h.p. engine. Her carrying capacity will bo sis times that of the Wairoa, which was purchased by Mr. May when in Now Zealand to take the expedition south, but wns eventually sold to liquidate the liabilities incidental to fitting out. Tho ship will he completed at San Francisco, nut some of the machinery is being manufactured in New York.
Mr. May further states that he has engaged Captain Miller as salvage expert, and he has also engaged an American engineer, who was in touch at San Francisco for four years with one of the survivors of the General Grant, ,namcd "Con" Drew—tho man who pointed out the scene of the wTeck to Messrs. Stevens and M'Donald. This engineer tried to form a company at one time to put to good purpose the information that no had obtained, but failed for lack of ready money.
