NEW ZEALAND GOLF.
CHAMPIONSHIP PROSPECTS. GOOD PLAY ANTICIPATED. EXTIiIKS AND DRAWINGS. The annual Xew Zealand Golf Championship meeting opens on tho Wellington Golf Club's links at Herctaunga. on Monday, and during the last few days a number of visitor entrants ;ind spectators havo arrived from the north and from the south. The remainder of the southern players arrive this morning, and will probably proceed direct to the Jinks. ' Tho links are in first-class order, although slightly sodden from the week's rain, but with a tine, day to-morrow will bo conducive to good golf 'for the opening round. If the weather holds good there aro probably no links in New Zealand that would bo more suitable for championship play. The greens are excellent, and the holes are of good length, a fair proportion of them being a drive nnd a brassie, or a drivo and a cleek, consequently, with a weak drive, it is difficult to recover against a good drivo. A number of I>"ew Zealand links are weak in this respect, and ou some a bad drive may be made up by a good or even fair mashio shot, thus allowing a player with a bad drive to catclfup to. the. good driver with his approach shot. But most of tho holes on the Heretaunga links justly allow tho good driver a distinct ■ advantage. However, the main thing is the weather, so let it be hoped that tho sun is interested in the game, and will condescend to remain, a most welcome spectator. If he will he will see a most successful meeting. Practically all the noted golfers are participating, so some exciting mntches may,be anticipated. In the open chnmpionship tho best play will naturally be expected from tho first ten amateurs who are drawn against the ten best professionals, the remainder are drawn according to their club handicap. Four rounds are played, the drawings for the first two of which appear below, the third and fourth rounds will bo settled later. Considering only tho first ten, the play of B. B. Wood and D. Hood should be well worth watching, likewise that of the other Christchurch player, H. E. Wright, who plays with F. C. Hood. Wright is playing well, ami if he maintains his present form he will most likely hand in a score hard to beat. Tho Auckland champion, J. C. Burns, playing with J. • A. Clements, is much thought of as a possible .winner by his fellow clubmen. B. J. Smith, the Tjunedin champion, plays W. B. Simpson, and should also hand in a good score. A. D. S. Duncan, the present .champion, both amateur nnd open, is playing with W. M'Ewan, rind being n remarkably steady golfer is almost certain to be in the running with a. good score. Among the professionals, .T. A. Clements is well favoured both for (he open championship and for the professional match. In the latter I'o plays.with P. G. Hood, which should be the best game from the spectators point of view. The next best game in the professionals match from the same point of view will most likely be that of W. M'Ewan and W. B. Simpson. It is doubtful if, even with the class of players that will be playing, the record for the. links of 69, which A. Duncan has four times established his olaim to, will be broken. If it is it is likely that as a new record it will last for some time.
