The Hibernian Society held a euchre paTty and dance at the Catholic Schoolroom last evening. There ivas a large attendance.' It is stated that Mr. W. H. Russell, excouncillor, of Lower liutt, will be a candidnto at tho impending by-election. A sitting of tho Petone Police Court was held yesterday morning, before Messrs. Short and Wakeham, Justices of the Peace; On a charge of insobriety, a first offender was convicted and discharged. Thomas Deveridge, similarly charged, wae fined 10s., in default 24 hours' imprisonment, and William J. Winter 55., in default ordered to spend 24 hours in gaol. A. J. Jones laid an information against E. J. Taylor for using insulting language towards him." The iniormnn't stated that lie gave no provocation, and could not understand Taylor's action. Taylor wos convicted and discharged, the polio?- informing him that if he continued to act as he had done they would apply for sureties that he would keep the peace. Mr. Jackson appeared for defendant.
