O'Donnell, liorough cnginper, who recently resigned owing to a difference of opinion with the council regarding drainage, has withdrawn his resignation, the council not yet having dealt with if. A special meeting was called Jast. week to consider the matter, and was adjourned to enable the Mayor to furnish a report on the engineer's department. This was responsible for tho engineer's withdrawal. EUROPEAN ART GALLERIES. Christchurch, September 11. Before Hie J'liilosophicnl Institute oi Canterbury this evening Mr. S. Hurst Seager delivered a lecture, on the European picture galleries and museums, their lighting and arrangement. Jlo said that a visit lo tho European galleries had proved disappointing. The lighting of twine was extremely bad, some were 1 airly lighted, hut not a single one was freo from defects. The new rooms added last year to the National Gallery had no -sooner liecn opened than great dissatisfaction was expressed with the lighting. "KISMET." Auckland, September 12. A largo crowd formed ft queuo from midnight yesterday to secure seats for the performance of "Kismet" by the Oscar AscheLily Brayton company. There was an unprecedented rush for seats, the whole cf tho dress circlo being reserved, and the stalls booked up for the entire season. INSTANTLY KILLED. Nelson, September 12. Webley Hadficld, eighteen months old, niet his death, in a peculiar manner on Wednesday evening. His. parents were travelling in a motor-boat between Awaron and Tonga, and during the journey the child fell against tho engine fly-wheel nnd was instantly killed. BICYCLE ROAD RACE. Christchurch. September 12. For tho Timaru to Christchurch cycle load race, which will bo run on Thursday next-, 120 entries have been received. A prisoner named George Jl'Gurk, aged 36, who was serving a sentence of seven years for having attempted to murder a man at Devonport, was accidentally killed at Mount Eden Gaol this afternoon.
